Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary

The Moreneta who refused to come down from the mountain

Montserrat (Spain) (880)

Tradition tells that on a Saturday afternoon in the year 880, some shepherd children saw a great light descend from the sky upon the rugged mountain of Montserrat and heard a strange, sweet, celestial melody. The miracle was not a one-night occurrence: it was repeated in the following weeks, and by then family members, neighbors, and ecclesiastical authorities, including the rector of Olesa de Montserrat and the bishop of Manresa, had come to the mountain. Upon climbing and searching among the rocks, they found a small cave and, inside, the image of the Virgin with the Child: the one the people would affectionately call La Moreneta (the Little Dark One).

They wanted to carry her in procession to Manresa, to honor her in the city. But, according to the story, as they walked down the path, the statue grew heavier and heavier, until it became impossible to move. Those present understood this as a clear sign: the Virgin did not want to descend to the plain. She wanted to stay there, on her jagged and rugged mountain, reaching towards the sky. And there she remained.

La imagen se hizo tan pesada que comprendieron que la Virgen quería quedarse en Montserrat.

It's important to state this with editor's honesty: this entire episode—the lights, the music, the discovery in the cave, the miraculous weight—is the founding tradition of the sanctuary, a very solid and cherished part of Montserrat's history, but the sources consulted do not provide contemporary documentary evidence of the event in 880. It is, therefore, a beautiful traditional origin story, not a historically proven fact. The date of 880 is the one established by tradition; when exactly the organized devotion began is not precisely known.

The beauty lies in the fact that the story doesn't end with the discovery, but rather with the simple discernment of the people: the Mother chose the heights, the steep slopes, the difficult terrain. And that memory didn't remain an isolated tale. Today, those who climb from the monastery to the Holy Cave can follow the so-called Monumental Rosary, a prayer route with fifteen scenes that transforms the path of the discovery into a path of Hail Marys. The trail to the cave is, thus, a Rosary made mountain.
