The Virgin of La Paloma did not originate as a grand Marian title, but as a humble devotional painting. The devotion, endorsed by the parish and the Archdiocese of Madrid, recounts that around 1787, Isabel Tintero, a resident of the La Latina neighborhood, found a discarded or abandoned canvas of Our Lady of Sorrows in a doorway and placed it in her home on Paloma Street. There, it began to receive the affection of the neighborhood's ordinary people, who came to pray; over time, the townspeople called it "Virgin of La Paloma" after the street where it was venerated. The influx of the faithful led to the construction of an oratory and, eventually, the church that is now a parish. The core of the story—Isabel Tintero and Paloma Street—is well established, although some minor details vary depending on the source.

Over the years, Our Lady of La Paloma has won the hearts of Madrid as the city's "popular patron saint," even though the official patron saint is Our Lady of Almudena. She is also the patron saint of Madrid's firefighters, and the origin of this connection is deeply touching: after the Civil War, without a float for the procession, it was the firefighters who carried the image of the Virgin on their own vehicles, and from then on, they adopted her as their patron saint. A beautiful image: those who risk their lives extinguishing fires and rescuing neighbors, placing themselves under the protection of the Mother.

Her feast day, August 15th, coincides with the Assumption and fills the traditional La Latina neighborhood with street parties, chulapos (traditional Madrid figures), and the traditional procession, one of the most cherished celebrations of the Madrid summer. The parish preserves numerous votive offerings and testimonies of favors received: healings, family assistance, and protection in accidents. The Virgin of La Paloma is also renowned for protecting children and pregnant women, who entrust themselves to her with confidence.

It is important to honestly distinguish between history and devotional narrative. The painting's humble origins, the figure of Isabel Tintero, the growth of the cult in La Latina, and the patronage of the firefighters are all historical facts; however, many of the specific favors attributed to the Virgin are experienced as a testament to the people's faith, without critical documentation of each individual case. What is certain is the living devotion that sustains this story.

Thus, the Dove reminds us that Mary does not disdain what is small or discarded, and that even a painting taken from a doorway can become a place of prayer. When we pray the Rosary, we place ourselves, like those firefighters, under the mantle of the Mother who cares for the humble.
