Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The Queen who evangelizes from the hill of the Maya

In Izamal, a city in Yucatán, the Marian shrine was not built just anywhere: it was constructed on ancient pre-Hispanic platforms, in what had been a very important Mayan ritual center, near the hill known as Kinich Kakmó. There, after the conquest, the Franciscans chose one of their main mission centers and founded, around 1550-1560, the convent of San Antonio de Padua, whose immense atrium is today one of the largest in all of the Americas.
The image venerated as Our Lady of Izamal is in the Sevillian style, most likely arriving from Spain in the 16th century and integrated into the evangelization of the region. The people know her as "Queen and Patroness of Yucatán." In the interpretation of local piety, Izamal's transformation from a "place of idols" to a Marian sanctuary is seen as a sign that Mary took possession of the ancient religious center to lead it to Christ. This is a deeply rooted theological and symbolic interpretation, though not supported by archival records.
Tradition links the Virgin to Friar Diego de Landa, a Franciscan famous for his role in the destruction of Mayan codices and, later, for his work "Relación de las cosas de Yucatán" (Account of the Things of Yucatán). He was associated with the main convents of the region, including Maní and Izamal. Historically, Izamal was a very important Franciscan mission center where Marian devotion was promoted; however, the specific attribution of him having brought this image and placed it on that altar is not supported by readily available primary documents: it is not precisely established, although it is a plausible tradition given his presence in the area.
Izamal is one of the major pilgrimage centers in southeastern Mexico. The faithful arrive on foot, by bicycle, and by truck from all over Yucatán, leaving votive offerings, promises, and testimonies of favors received. The phenomenon is fully verifiable, although each specific miracle remains at the level of a testament of faith. The image has received canonical coronations and ecclesiastical recognition; one of the culminating moments was the public veneration by Saint John Paul II during his visit, which underscored its patronage over Yucatán. The Rosary accompanies the life of the sanctuary as a common Marian devotion, although there is no record of a specific founding Rosary tradition.
