In northern Sri Lanka, deep in the jungle of the Mannar district, lies the shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, the most important Catholic pilgrimage site on the island. There, a small image of the Virgin Mary is venerated, and for centuries, worshippers of diverse origins and languages—Tamils and Sinhalese—have gathered around it seeking solace and protection.

Tradition links the origins of the sanctuary to the 17th century, during a time of persecution of Catholics under the Calvinist Dutch rule that succeeded the Portuguese. Local lore recounts that persecuted Christians fled into the thick of the forest, carrying with them an image of the Virgin, and that there, in Madhu, they built a refuge where they could profess their faith and entrust themselves to the Mother of God.

This Marian devotion is traditionally believed to offer special protection against snakebites, which are common in that jungle region; many pilgrims take home soil from the shrine as a sign of their faith. It is important to present these accounts as deeply rooted devotional traditions, not as precisely documented facts.

What is certain is the sanctuary's historical role as a major pilgrimage center and a place of peace and reconciliation, especially during the decades of civil war that plagued the country, when Madhu sheltered numerous displaced people. The earliest details of its origin and specific miracles belong to tradition; no contemporary documentation exists to confirm them.
