Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"The vote of Maipú: a temple for the grateful homeland"

In the Maipú district, on the outskirts of Santiago, stands the Votive Temple of Maipú, National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Patron Saint of Chile and "Sworn General" of its Armed Forces. The image, a colonial carving surrounded by Chilean flags, is linked in the country's memory to the birth of the nation.
Tradition tells that on the eve of the Battle of Maipú, April 5, 1818, Supreme Director Bernardo O'Higgins made a solemn vow: if victory was achieved and Chile attained its freedom, he would order the construction of a temple to Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the site of the battle. After the patriot triumph, that promise took shape as a "temple of national gratitude," and the current sanctuary stands as the materialization of that vow.
Here, a careful distinction is necessary. The existence of a votive temple linked to the victory at Maipú and the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is firmly established; the specific detail of O'Higgins's personal act before the battle is more rooted in patriotic and religious tradition than in a preserved contemporary record. The image is a colonial carving; tradition holds that it originated in Quito and arrived in Chile in 1785, a fact transmitted primarily by local historiography.
The well-documented event is the coronation of the image by Saint John Paul II on April 3, 1987, who declared it Queen and Patroness of Chile before a large crowd. Every July 16, the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, thousands of pilgrims walk to Maipú fulfilling promises for health, employment, and family. The feast explicitly includes the recitation of the Rosary; the connection to this prayer is devotional and Carmelite, without any recorded apparition or revelation that links it in a singular way to this image.
