Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The Virgin who defended Sinj
In the mountainous region of Dalmatia, inland from the Croatian coast, the city of Sinj holds a memory that is both religious and civic. Our Lady of Sinj is not merely a venerated image for its people: she is the symbol of the historical identity of the entire region, the Mother to whom they attribute the city's salvation in its darkest hour.
Local tradition, widely disseminated, links the image of the Virgin with the defense of Sinj against the Ottoman siege of 1715. Popular memory affirms that the Virgin's intercession protected the city and favored the retreat of the enemy, in an episode that was forever engraved in the hearts of its inhabitants and that is renewed every year in its great Marian festival of the summer.
Here, however, it is important to distinguish between verifiable devotional context and tradition. What is established as a general framework is the existence of a strong Marian devotion in Sinj and a historical cult of the image, to the point that the Virgin is inseparable from the city's civic-religious identity. The account of the 1715 siege as a miracle—and the direct attribution of the victory to the Virgin's intercession—belongs to local tradition: the available sources do not contain an ecclesiastical assessment of the miraculous historicity of the episode, nor do they provide reliable information about votive offerings, specific miracles, or the exact origin of the image.
Nor should we make excessive claims about the Rosary. No specific institutional link between Sinj and the Rosary is found in the sources; if one exists, it should be verified at the sanctuary itself or within the diocese, but it is inappropriate to assert it here without a source.
Thus remains what is true and beautiful: a city that knows it is defended, a Mother to whom it attributes its survival, and a faith that, beyond the documented accuracy of the miracle, has kept gratitude alive for three centuries. Tradition has its own truth—that of a people's gratitude—and it is fitting to respect it without disguising it as proven historical chronicle.
