Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary

"The doves of light of Assiut"

Assiut (Egypt) (2000-2001)

In Assiut, in Upper Egypt, near the monastery where Coptic tradition commemorates one of the final stages of the Holy Family's flight to Egypt, a luminous phenomenon began on August 17, 2000, above the Coptic Orthodox Church of St. Mark. As in Zeitoun, there were no visionaries or spoken messages: it was light, seen by multitudes.

Witnesses, both Coptic Christians and Muslims, described a luminous female figure above the dome, intense flashes of light, and large white doves flying around the church, emitting light. One witness, quoted in a Catholic chronicle, summarized it thus: “I saw Mary; she was beautiful, wearing a blue veil. Light emanated from her hands, then doves began to fly; they were as large as eagles and emitted light.” Night after night, for months, people gathered around the church to pray, sing Marian hymns, and contemplate the miracle.

Cristianos y musulmanes velaban juntos, de rodillas, ante la misma luz: en Assiut la Madre no hizo distinción de credos.

It is advisable to proceed with caution. It is documented, through photographs, videos, and reports in the Christian press and some other media outlets, that between 2000 and 2001 there was a phenomenon of lights and luminous figures above the Church of St. Mark, witnessed by many people and interpreted by the faithful as a manifestation of the Virgin Mary. However, unlike in Zeitoun, the exact degree of official Coptic recognition (text, formula, and date of a decree) is not publicly available, and accounts of healings circulate in devotional circles without verifiable medical documentation.

The shared veneration is a beautiful detail: on those nights, Muslims and Christians prayed side by side, and many experienced the phenomenon as a sign of unity in times of tension. Coptic devotion is expressed primarily through hymns, litanies, and the prayer rope; there is evidence of intense communal Marian prayer, and it is likely that some Catholics present prayed the Rosary, but there is no record of a specific message regarding this prayer or a Marian mandate related to it.

Es hecho atestiguado el fenómeno luminoso colectivo, la presencia de cristianos y musulmanes y las vigilias de oración; pertenecen a la tradición devocional las curaciones individuales y el grado preciso de reconocimiento eclesial, que no consta con detalle.
