There are small countries whose faith is concentrated, like a heartbeat, in a single place. For Latvia, that place is Aglona. Its basilica, with its white facade and two towers, rises amidst lakes and forests in the east of the country, and is consistently presented as Latvia's main Marian shrine and one of the most important in the entire Baltic region.

Para toda Letonia, la fe mariana del país late en un solo nombre: Aglona.

What can be stated with certainty is its status as a major pilgrimage center. Every year, especially around the Feast of the Assumption, thousands of pilgrims converge on Aglona from Latvia and neighboring countries, in one of the most visible manifestations of faith in the Baltic region, a region that knew well the persecution and silence imposed during the 20th century and that has made this sanctuary a symbol of identity and spiritual resistance.

Here, however, honesty calls for moderation. The sources consulted do not contain a concrete and sufficiently documented account of the origin of the image venerated in Aglona, nor a specific miraculous anecdote with a date and protagonists, nor a reliable chronology of the establishment of the devotion. Rather than inventing a founding miracle, it is worth acknowledging that the strength of Aglona described in the sources lies, above all, in popular veneration and the pilgrimage prestige accumulated over generations.

Similarly, no direct and verifiable link between Aglona and the recitation of the Rosary is found in the available sources. It is reasonable to assume that the Rosary forms part of the devotion of pilgrims who visit the shrine, as in any major Marian site, but a unique historical connection cannot be asserted without supporting evidence.

What remains, then, is the sober and true portrait of a beloved sanctuary: the house of the Mother in the heart of Latvia, where an entire people climb every summer to lay their sorrows and hopes before her.
