Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary

"Our Lady of Bechouat: the Lebanese shrine of Christians and Muslims"

Bechouat (Lebanon)

In the village of Bechouat, in the Baalbek-Hermel region of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, Our Lady of Bechouat is venerated. The shrine, belonging to the Maronite Church, an Eastern Catholic denomination, houses an image of the Virgin and Child in a rocky niche and is visited by both Christians and Muslims. It is a place of prayer, novenas, and the recitation of the Rosary, and is mentioned in devotional guides to Lebanese shrines.

What can be stated with certainty is that this Marian shrine exists today, frequented by pilgrims from Lebanon and neighboring countries—a place of hope where people come to ask for favors and give thanks, leaving votive offerings such as crutches and plaques. Many favors, especially healings, are attributed to it, according to devotional testimonies, although there is no published official record nor accessible canonical processes.

Es un lugar donde María acoge por igual a cristianos y musulmanes, y donde unos y otros confían a su intercesión la salud de sus hijos.

It is important to be honest. Pious tradition recounts that the image was found in a grotto or on a tree trunk, and speaks of healings of the paralyzed and chronically ill; however, these accounts are not supported by historical documents, available archives, or academic studies: they belong to oral tradition and popular devotion. In particular, the story circulates of a mute Jordanian Muslim boy who supposedly spoke before the image in 2004; after searching for it, no reliable source (from the sanctuary, the Church, or the press) has been found to document it with names, dates, or witnesses. For the sake of honesty, this specific account is not recorded and can only be treated as an unverified devotional tradition.

Regarding the Rosary, it is very present in Maronite tradition during pilgrimages and novenas, and there are references to pilgrims praying it before the image and to groups climbing the mountain while praying it. However, there is no record of a proclamation of Our Lady of Bechouat as "Our Lady of the Rosary" nor of a documented historical confraternity: the connection is that of a typical Marian shrine.
