San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin - Full biography

Mexico · 1474-1548

Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin was a Mexican indigenous who received the apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1531. He was the first indigenous in America to be canonized by the Catholic Church.

The first years (1474-1531)

Juan Diego and his wife, Malintzin, converted to Christianity in 1524, when the Franciscan friars arrived in Mexico. They were baptized by Fra Juan de Valverde. Juan Diego was about 50 when he had the apparitions.

The apparitions (1531)

The Virgin asked him to go to Bishop Fray John of Zumárraga and tell him that he wanted a chapel to be built in the Tepeyac. Juan Diego obeyed, but the bishop did not believe him.

The Virgin appeared three times more: on December 10, 11 and 12. In the fourth apparition, he asked him to go up to the hill and pick up roses from Castile, which he would find flowers even if it were December. Juan Diego obeyed, and when he opened his tylma to bring the roses to the bishop, the image of the Virgin was printed in the fabric.

Life after the apparitions (1531-1548)

After the apparitions, Juan Diego lived a simple and humble life. He retired to live in a small cabin near the Basilica of Guadalupe, where he took care of the image of the Virgin and attended to the pilgrims.

Juan Diego died on May 30, 1548, at the age of 74. He was buried in the chapel of San José, in the Basilica of Guadalupe. His body was exhumed in 1974 and found incorruted.

The canonization

Juan Diego was beatified on May 6, 1990 by Juan Paul II in the Plaza de la Constitución de México, to millions of people. It was canonized on July 31, 2002 in the Basilica of Guadalupe, becoming the first indigenous of America to be canonized.

The legacy
