Blessed Elisa Martínez, also known as Elisabetta Martinez, was the founder of the Daughters of Santa Maria de Leuca. His life belongs to the recent history of the consecrated life in Italy and is linked to a Marian spirituality that wanted to be translated into education, reception and service. This fact sheet keeps the data of the canon process, the memory of the congregation and any extraordinary attribution that is not documented separate.
Where is he?
The map uses the Roman general house of the Daughters of Santa Maria de Leuca as a territorial reference. The research report provides the coordinates of that place and the consultation of OpenStreetMap Nominatim returns the track at the same point; it is not said that the coordinate marks the interior of the chapel or the grave. So the precision is declared (PHP 4 = 4.1.0). The source of the cause identifies the house as a place of memory of Elisa and Teresa Lanfranco.
Documented history
Elisa Martínez was born on 25 March 1905 and died on 8 February 1991. In the course of his religious life he founded the Daughters of Santa Maria de Leuca, whose name refers to the Marian sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca. The choice of name expresses a spiritual orientation and does not make the founder the protagonist of an undocumented personal apparition.
The congregation developed its charism in works of education, care and accompaniment. The biography of a foundress should be read together with the lives of the religious and the people served, not only as a succession of inner experiences. The material of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints places Elisa within the history of a concrete ecclesial work and a cause examined by the Church.
Elisa was declared venerable in the process of her heroic virtues and beatified on June 25, 2023 after the approval of the miracle presented for the cause. Its ecclesial state is therefore that of beata de la Iglesia católica. Beatification recognizes its Christian life and the miracle approved in the process; it does not certify as supernatural every memory or account that may appear in local devotion.
A foundation under the protection of Mary
Elisa's Marian relationship appears in the very name of her institute and in the protection entrusted to the Virgin. It is a devotion of consecrated life: Mary is venerated as a mother and intercessor and service to people is understood as a response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Adoration, on the other hand, corresponds only to God.
The name of Santa Maria de Leuca connects the foundation with a sanctuary and a tradition of pilgrimage from southern Italy. This connection must be expressed as ecclesial charism. There is no personal apparition in the sources consulted from Mary to Elisa or a canonical coronation linked to her grave, so that these elements are not added.
Memory of the General House
The Roman general house retains the memory of the foundress and Teresa Lanfranco. The map makes it possible to locate this institutional reference in Rome, but it is not intended to represent all the places where the religious worked or to reduce the charism to a single point. To say "approved miracle in the cause" does not allow to invent the diagnosis, chronology or names of the persons involved.
The general house works as a memory of a work that does not depend solely on the foundry. The religious who continue the charism receive a historical responsibility: to preserve Marian orientation and, at the same time, to respond to specific needs of each era. The map recalls an institutional origin, but the life of the congregation has developed in more places than the point indicated.
The reference to Santa Maria de Leuca should also not be confused with an affirmation of the supernatural nature of an apparition.
