Blessed Maria de San José Alvarado

The Blessed Mary of San José Alvarado, Laura Alvarado Cardozo, was a Venezuelan religious and founder of the Agustin Recoleta of the Heart of Jesus. The Church reminds her of a spirituality centered on the Eucharist and of the service of the elderly, orphans and abandoned people. Maracay, in the Aragua state, is the main place of his congregational work and the territorial reference used on this map.

Where is he?

The tab is located in Maracay, Aragua, Venezuela. The coordinate comes from OpenStreetMap using Nominatim and the consultation responded HTTP 200. The precision is locality: there is no clear geometry in the cross-sectional sources that allows to state that the point is the inside of the tomb or of a particular chapel. This is the place of its house of worship and its foundation, not all the places of its life.

Documented history

Laura Alvarado Cardozo was presented by John Paul II as the first Blessed of the Venezuelan Church at the beatification celebration of May 7, 1995. The documentation of the Apostolic Acts of the Holy See links his religious name, Mary of St. Joseph, to Maracay and to the foundation of the Recoletas of the Heart of Jesus.

His religious work was born of a life of prayer and of concrete attention to those who were left outside family networks. The congregation was dedicated to the assistance of the elderly and of orphaned or abandoned children. The pontifical source sums up his charity with a phrase addressed to his daughters: everyone's discarded should be welcomed as their own. Here the meaning of this teaching is preserved without making it a more extensive quote from the source.

The Holy See also describes its love for the Eucharist. He spent long periods before the sacred and worked out ways for them to be distributed free to priests. This fact helps to understand the link between his contemplative life and his care action: service does not appear as an isolated activity, but as a response to a Christian spirituality centered on Christ.

The 1995 beatification recognizes his holiness according to the Church's process. No subsequent canonization is stated on this sheet and no dates are added which are not included in the sources consulted. Maracay's mapping location is also not intended to fix the exact point of each biographical event.

Marian Tradition and Devotion

The Marian devotion of Mary of St. Joseph appears in the pontifical documentation as a tender relationship with the Virgin. His own religious name expresses that reference. The source recalls its desire to live and die by singing the Magnificat, but there is no personal apparition or an approved Marian message associated with it.

The fact sheet distinguishes Mary's veneration from the worship due to God. To ask for the intercession of the Virgin and the Blessed is part of the language of Catholic devotion; it does not mean to attribute to them the worship that corresponds only to the Lord. Nor is a canonical coronation of a specific image claimed because it is not recorded in the sources used.

Ecclesial State

Maria de San José Alvarado es beata de la Iglesia católica. He was beatified by John Paul II on May 7, 1995. The revised documentation does not allow us to affirm here a later canonization; therefore the term "beata" is maintained and its ecclesial state is not raised.

Anecdotes and stories

A significant image of his life is the manual manufacture of thousands of forms for priests, a humble work attached to his prayer before the sacred. Another is the creation of a congregation to receive whom no one wanted to receive. Maracay's memory is understood from this combination of Eucharistic worship, community life and service to vulnerable people, without the need to add undocumented episodes.

Prayer

Blessed Mary of San José, pray for the elderly, for the abandoned children and for those who live without a family that welcomes them. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us to serve Jesus Christ present in the needy, with faith, tenderness and perseverance. Amen.
