History

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary is the oldest Catholic church in Texas, founded in 1847. It survived the great Galveston hurricane of 1900, which destroyed much of the city. It is a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Declared a minor basilica in 1979, it is a National Historic Landmark.
