Los Scillitans martyrs are a Christian group of Roman Africa known by the Acta martyrum Scillitanorum. The process and execution are traditionally located on July 17, 180, in Cartago, but the city of origin, Scillium, has not been identified with certainty. The map uses Kasserine as a provincial reference and declares it so as not to convert a geographical hypothesis into an exact GPS.
Where is he?
The file is located in Kasserine, Kasserine governorate, Tunisia, with precision province. OpenStreetMap / Nominatim responded HTTP 200 for the location used as a reference. It is not claimed that the node is Scillium or that it is the place of judgment. The investigation distinguishes between the city of Cartago, where the trial was conducted according to the minutes, and the provenance of the accused, which continues to be discussed.
Documented history
The Sicilian Records are very close to a judicial protocol: the judge, questions, the answers of the accused and the judgement appear. Sperato acts as a spokesman in the text transmitted and claims that he and his companions have led a peaceful life, but does not accept to swear by the emperor's genius. The document belongs to the ancient history of the African Church and allows us to study both the legal pressure and the language of the first Latin Christians.
The traditional date is July 17, 180. The editions and recisions do not always present exactly the same list of names or the same scope of the group: some short versions retain six names, while the editorial tradition speaks of twelve martyrs, seven men and five women. This is why the tab uses the collective name and avoids presenting a single figure as if there was no textual divergence.
The execution was linked to Cartago, while the location of Scillium has been sought in today's Western Tunisia. Archaeological proposals do not allow a single location to be affirmed. The map therefore shows an administrative area and not a sanctuary, a grave or a ruin identified with the group.
Tradition and Legend
The ancient veneration of the martyrs is based on the transmission of their acts and on the liturgical memory of the Church. The subsequent enlargements, especially when they turn every detail into a perfectly rebuilt scene, must be distinguished from the judicial core. No legend is added or the fact that the text has survived is presented as a miracle.
Ecclesial state and Marian dimension
The Sicilian martyrs are martyrs of ancient Catholic veneration. The fact sheet does not claim that there is a modern statement about the supernatural of any episode: it is about martyrdom and ancient documents. There is no specific Marian invocation linked to Scillium or to the judicial scene. Mary is venerated and invoked as an intercessor; God is the only one who is adored.
Anecdotes and stories
The brevity of the minutes is precisely what makes them valuable. In a few lines the demand for authority, Sperato's response and the refusal to abandon the Christian consciousness appear. The text does not offer a complete biography of each accused and the file does not fill those silences with names, parentheses or invented miracles.
Prayer
Scilitous Martyrs, witnesses to the first African Church, pray for those who must respond with truth to the pressure and for the communities that suffer. Ask the Virgin Mary to take us to Jesus Christ and make us faithful, prudent and merciful. Amen.
