Holy Happiness of Carthage

Holy Happiness of Carthage, also called Felicitas, is remembered with Saint Perpetua in the ancient narrative of his martyrdom. The story presents her as a enslaved and pregnant woman who shared prison with other catechumens. The file retains the difference between the old document, the liturgical tradition and what can be said today about the cartographed place.

Where is he?

The marker is located in Cartago, Tunisia, on the archaeological amphitheatre identified in OpenStreetMap. The cartographic source returned HTTP 200 and the enclosure exists as a visitable archaeological place. Precision verified_place refers to the amphitheater, not to a certainty about the execution of Happiness. Research indicates that the amphitheater became a place of memory, but that it has not been shown to be exactly the stage of martyrdom.

Documented history

Happiness appears in the Passio sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis, an ancient work that combines a section attributed to the voice of Perpetua with the narration of a writer. According to that text, Happiness was pregnant when she was imprisoned. His pregnancy could prevent him from being executed together with others, because Roman law did not apply the same sentence to a pregnant woman.

The narrative tells that he gave birth shortly before the execution and that, once the child was born, he was able to share the fate of his companions. The episode is part of an ancient martyrdom source and explains the Christian memory of Happiness; it is not presented here as a clinical transcription or as a data that can be checked outside the text. The traditional date of the joint martyrdom is 7 March 203.

Happiness is not reduced to a secondary character. His presence shows that the community was made up of people of different social conditions. The relationship with Perpetua, prison, pregnancy and childbirth make visible the human cost of persecution and the way in which ancient narration linked suffering, Christian hope and fidelity.

Tradition, Legend and Marian Devotion

The Cartago tradition celebrated Happiness as a martyr with Perpetua. The subsequent hagiographical enlargements should be distinguished from the old core of the Pass. No cures, apparitions or wonders are added that do not appear in the cross-cutting sources. Nor is the amphitheater confused with an identified tomb.

There is no particular Marian advocation associated with Happiness. His record is integrated into the map of saints by his martyr's state, not by an apparition of Mary. Christian prayer can ask for the intercession of Happiness and of Our Lady; worship belongs exclusively to God.

Ecclesial State

Happiness is holy and martyr of ancient Christian veneration, venerated in Catholic tradition and in Orthodox Churches. This expression describes the state of veneration that consists, without turning all the details of the story into proven independent facts.

Anecdotes and stories

The memory of Happiness retains a very concrete tension: the birth of your child occurs within a prison and, at the same time, opens up the possibility of the mother being executed with the community. History does not need ornaments to show its strength. The ancient source also records the difference between the pain of childbirth and the suffering that the account attributes to martyrdom; this comparison is maintained as part of the text, not as a quote presented out of context.

Prayer

Holy Happiness, Martyr of Carthage, pray for mothers, children in danger and those who suffer because of their faith or social vulnerability. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us to care for life and to trust God in the trial. Amen.
