Burma, the land of pagodas and Maria's love
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is home to a Catholic community of approximately 1.2 million faithful, around 2.2% of the population. Catholicism arrived with Italian Barnabite missionaries and missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP) in the 19th century. Today, it has 16 dioceses and a deeply rooted Marian devotion among the Karen, Chin, and Kachin ethnic groups. Despite decades of military dictatorship and civil war, the Church remains a pillar of hope and reconciliation.

Marian history of Myanmar
Devotion to the Virgin Mary arrived in Burma with the Italian Barnabite missionaries, who established the first missions in the Yangon region in the mid-19th century. They were followed by the Paris Foreign Missions (MEP) priests, who evangelized the interior and northern mountains. The Christian faith took root especially among the Karen, Chin, and Kachin ethnic minorities, peoples who have suffered constant persecution at the hands of Burmese military regimes.
The Virgin Mary is for Burmese Catholics a symbol of peaceful resistance and comfort in the midst of suffering. During the civil war that has taken the country since independence in 1948, and especially after the coup d & apos; état of 2021, Catholic communities have gathered around the Rosary to call for peace. The Catholic Church in Myanmar is one of the few institutions that enjoy the confidence of all ethnic groups for their educational, health and humanitarian work.
Roses and tears: Marian anecdotics from Myanmar
- La Catedral de Yangon sobrevivio a la guerra. La Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Yangon, construida en 1895 en estilo neogotico con sus impresionantes vidrieras marianas, fue el unico gran edificio del centro de Yangon que quedó intacto tras los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La ciudad fue arrasada, pero la catedral permanecio en pie como un signo de la proteccion de María.
- Nuestra Señora de Nyaunglebin, santuario de paz. En la aldea de Nyaunglebin, una imagen de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes es el centro del unico Santuario Nacional de Myanmar. Durante la guerra civil, peregrinos de todas las etnias —karen, shan, bamar, chin— acuden juntos a rezar por la paz, dejando sus diferencias a los pies de la Virgen.
- La Virgen de los Karen. La etnia karen, que sufre una de las guerras civiles mas largas del mundo, tiene una devoción especial a la Virgen de Fátima. Cuentan los ancianos que María llora por sus hijos perseguidos. En las montañas de Karenni, los catequistas ensenan el Rosario a los niños como su unica herencia.
- El cardenal Charles Bo consagra Myanmar a María. El primer cardenal birmano, Charles Maung Bo (creado por el papa Francisco en 2015), ha sido una voz incansable por la paz. El 8 de diciembre de 2021, tras el golpe militar, consagro solemnemente Myanmar a la Virgen María pidiendo su intercesion para detener la violencia.
- Los martires del Rosario. Durante los enfrentamientos entre el ejercito birmano (Tatmadaw) y los grupos etnicos armados, decenas de catequistas, sacerdotes y religiosos han sido asesinados. Segun los testimonios, muchos de ellos rezaban el Rosario en el momento de su muerte. La Iglesia birmana los venera como testigos de la fe.

Myanmar is home to a variety of Marian devotions, from the grand cathedrals in the cities to the rural chapels in the Chin and Kachin mountains. These are the main ones:
Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Yangon
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is the most important Catholic cathedral in Myanmar. Built in a neo-Gothic style by the Italian Barnabite missionaries, it is an architectural jewel with glass windows that represent the mysteries of the Rosary. It was the only large structure in the centre of Yangon that survived intact World War II. It is the seat of the Archidiocesis of Yangon and the heart of the Burmese Catholic Church.

Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de Nyaunglebin
The National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes of Nyaunglebin is the only national sanctuary in Myanmar. Built in a rural environment, it houses an image of the Virgin of Lourdes that attracts pilgrims from all the ethnic groups of the country. It is a place of reconciliation where karen, bamar, shan and chin pray together for peace. During the civil war, the sanctuary has been a shelter for internally displaced persons.

Nuestra Señora de Fátima de Mandalay
In the old royal city of Mandalay, devotion to Our Lady of Fatima congregates Burmese faithful from all backgrounds. Especially loved by the Karen community, which has made this advocation its flag of faith in the midst of persecution. Every 13 May, thousands of pilgrims go through the streets of Mandalay in procession.

Inmaculada Concepcion de Myitkyina
La Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion de Myitkyina es la sede de la Diocesis de Myitkyina, en el estado Kachin, una de las zonas mas conflictivas del país. Los kachin, de mayoria cristiana, tienen una devoción profunda a la Virgen María. La catedral ha sido testigo de decadas de guerra civil entre el ejercito birmano y el Ejercito de Independencia Kachin (KIA).

Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro de Yangon
Devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help arrived in Yangon with the Redemptorist missionaries. It is one of the most beloved Marian devotions among the Burmese Catholic community, especially among the faithful of the Archdiocese of Yangon. The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is carried in procession through the city streets every year.

Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de Yangon
The Catholic community of Yangon has a parish dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, where the faithful come to pray for the sick and needy. It is a local pilgrimage center where the grotto of Massabielle is recreated, complete with holy water and candles.

Inmaculada Concepcion de Mandalay
La segunda ciudad del país acoge una devoción particular a la Inmaculada Concepcion, con una iglesia dedicada en el corazón de Mandalay. Es punto de encuentro de la comunidad católica local y centro de catequesis y formacion para los jovenes.
