San Carlos de Foucauld He was a priest, hermit and missionary whose life was deeply linked to the Algerian Sahara. The Assekrem, in the Tamanrasset region, retains the memory of the hermitage where he lived in prayer, study and presence near the Tuaregs. The marker is located in Assekrem's cartographed territorial reference: it is not presented as an exact inner GPS of the building.
Where is he?
Assekrem is part of the Hoggar massif in southern Algeria. OpenStreetMap / Nominatie identifies the place by node 5483793267 and responded HTTP 200. As the mapping response identifies the territorial reference and not an unequivocal geometry of the hermitage, the accuracy is declared locality. The Holy See documents Foucauld's presence in the desert and his relationship with the Tuareg population.
Documented history
Charles de Foucauld was born in France in 1858, went through a religious conversion and was ordained a priest. In Algeria he sought a life of prayer, worship and silent service, learning the language of the Tuaregs and working in language materials. The Assekrem represents a stage of that existence, not a Marian apparition or a sanctuary founded on a supernatural phenomenon.
The hermitage was raised during its stay at the Hoggar, around 1910 according to the research used. Foucauld did not create a large congregation in life, nor did he bring together a stable community on the top; its importance was in the form of a Christian presence he wanted to offer: prayer, friendship, study of the language and closeness with the people of the region. He was killed in Tamanrasset in 1916.
The Holy See canonized Carlos de Foucauld on May 15, 2022. Ecclesial recognition refers to his holiness and the reception of his life and intercession; he does not turn every local memory of the Assekrem into a supernatural test. The tab retains the distinction between biographical history and subsequent devotion.
Tradition and Marian Dimension
The spirituality of Foucauld feeds on the Gospel, the Eucharist and the contemplation of Jesus in Nazareth. The cross-cutting sources do not document a Marian advocation of the hermitage or an apparition in the Assekrem. When you pray in this place, Mary can be venerated and her intercession can be asked; worship belongs to God.
Ecclesial State
Carlos de Foucauld is Catholic saint canonized. The map incorporates it as a saint for its ecclesial state and places the place of memory of Assekrem with cartographic prudence. It is not said that the marker corresponds to a tomb or that the hermitage is an approved Marian sanctuary.
Anecdotes and stories
One of the characteristics of his project was patient attention to the language and culture of the Tuaregs. This work cannot be reduced to a romantic image of the desert: it included study, hospitality, prayer and concrete human relations. The subsequent reception of Foucauld has inspired diverse spiritual families, but the fact sheet does not attribute the same decisions or texts to all of them.
Prayer
St. Charles of Foucauld, brother of all and witness to the silent presence of Christ, pray for those who live in isolated places and for those who seek to serve without imposing themselves. He asks the Virgin Mary to lead us to Jesus and teach us humility, listening and charity. Amen.
