San Marcelo de Tangier, also called Marcelo the Centurion, is venerated as a Christian martyr of the ancient Tingis, the current Tanger. His memory comes from the minutes that present him to the Roman authority after rejecting the imperial ceremonies. The map points to Tangier as a historical location; it does not aim to identify a square, court or place of execution that sources do not place with modern precision.
Where is he?
Tanger is located in the Moroccan region of Tanger- Tetuan- Alhucemas. OpenStreetMap / Nominatie returns the 2758781 ratio and responded HTTP 200. Precision locality it is deliberate: Marcelo's memory is linked to the city, but there is no main tomb preserved there. The later tradition linked its relics to León, in Spain, without turning that tradition into a different African coordinate.
Documented history
The ancient acts present Marcelo as a centurion which, during an official celebration, shows that he is Christian and cannot participate in the sacrifices. Tradition dates its martyrdom in 298. The sources disagree on the liturgical date and in details of the story, so the common framework is preserved here without pretending a unanimity that does not exist.
The narrative of his process expresses the clash between the Christian identity of the accused and the religious obligations of the imperial apparatus. The phrase with which Jesus Christ's servant is proclaimed belongs to the textual tradition of martyrdom; it is not presented as a modern literal recording. Ecclesial memory received him as a witness to Christ and not as the founder of a Marian advocation.
Tradition and Legend
Hagiographical tradition sometimes added family and colleagues whose degree of historicity does not consist in the same way as the core of the process. The relationship with León, where a later cult is preserved, is an important part of its reception, but it does not allow to state that all details of the transfer of relics are documented with equal safety.
There is no Marian advocation of its own linked to the martyrdom of Marcelo in Tangier. The faithful can ask for their intercession and that of the Virgin Mary; Mary is venerated and God is the only one who is adored.
Ecclesial State
Marcelo es Holy martyr of Catholic and Orthodox veneration. The French Catholic Church collects him as a martyr of Tangier and the Eastern Christian tradition also retains his memory. The state of veneration does not make the city cartographed proof of the exact point of martyrdom.
Anecdotes and stories
The history of Marcelo was linked to two cities separated by the Mediterranean: Tangier, where tradition places its martyrdom, and Leon, where a cult was developed after its relics. The map shows only the first territorial memory treated in this lot and leaves explicit the difference between the place of the account and the later place of veneration.
Prayer
St. Marcelo of Tangier, martyr and witness of Jesus Christ, pray for those who seek to live their faith with consistency and for the peoples who keep the memory of their witnesses. He asks the Virgin Mary to lead us to peace, truth and charity. Amen.
