Santa Angela de la Cruz

Santa Angela de la Cruz Guerrero, also called Mother of the Poor, founded the Sisters of the Cross. His congregation wanted to live among the poor and take care of them in their homes. His body is preserved in the chapel of the mother house, whose memory is located in Seville.

Where is he?

The map uses Sevilla as territorial reference of the convent of the Sisters of the Cross. The cartographic consultation identifies the administrative relationship of the city, but not an unequivocal geometry of the chapel or of the tomb; therefore it remains accurate locality. The tab does not invent the exact point of the temple.

Documented history

Angela de la Cruz was born in 1846. It founded the congregation on August 2, 1875 and its constitutions were approved in 1879. The sisters lived in simplicity and went to the homes of poor people to accompany them and meet their needs. The mother house keeps the body of the foundress and keeps that memory of service alive.

It was beatified on 5 November 1982 and canonized by John Paul II on 4 May 2003. Its ecclesial state is that of canonized saint of the Catholic Church. Canonization recognizes its holiness; it does not force each devotional account to be converted into a proven chronicle.

The Cross and the Poor

The mystical tradition of the congregation states that, in prayer, Angela saw an empty cross against that of Christ and understood that she should occupy it spiritually, becoming poor with the poor. It is preserved as a spiritual tradition of its biography and not as a fact that the tab can independently verify.

What is documented in the foundation is a way of life and a concrete work: prayer, voluntary poverty, home care and closeness. Poverty is not used here as a romantic ideal of misery, but as an expression of a religious option aimed at sharing life and serving vulnerable people.

Rosary and Marian devotion

The sources consulted report that he learned to pray the rosary in his family, that he prayed before Our Lady of Health and that in the shoe shop he prayed daily. The first community house had a picture of the Virgin of the Dolores. Mary is venerated and invoked as an intercessor; worship corresponds only to God.

The Sevillian memory also tells that for three days many people passed before his body and that the City Council held an extraordinary session in his honor. It's a public memory episode linked to his death, not a statement of miracle.

Prayer

St. Angela of the Cross, pray for the poor, for those who visit the sick and for the communities that serve in silence. He asks the Virgin of the Dolores to teach us to accompany Christ in those who suffer. Amen.
