Santa Bonifacia Rodríguez

Santa Bonifacia Rodríguez de Castro She was the founder of the Siervas of San José. His work joined the life of prayer with the dignification of working women and with Christian formation in workshops. The memory of his mother house is part of the map of saints.

Where is he?

The marker corresponds to the Sagrada Familia de las Siervas de San José College, on Marquesa de Almarza de Salamanca street, OSM cartographic reference of the house and work of the congregation. The fact sheet does not claim that every stage of his life occurred there: the place of the map represents the institutional memory and the tomb linked to the mother house.

Documented history

Bonifacia was born in Salamanca in 1837 and worked as a chancellor. Together with Jesuit priest Francisco Butiñá, he promoted workshops in which women workers could make a living and live their faith without being separated from society. The foundation of the Siervas of San José was born of this concern for the work, education and dignity of women.

The sources of the cause and of the Church also document the tensions that went through the foundation. Bonifacia was sent to Zamora and died there in 1905. His remains were transferred to Salamanca on March 13, 1945, to the mother house of the Siervas of San José. The history of this transfer must be distinguished from the building narrations later transmitted by the congregation.

The Holy See includes it among the saints canonized by Benedict XVI on October 23, 2011. Its ecclesial state is that of canonized saint of the Catholic Church. The canonization confirms his holiness recognized by the Church, but does not force him to accept as a proven history every popular anecdote associated with his memory.

Work, prayer and Mary

The spirituality of Bonifacia is expressed in the union between St. Joseph, the humble work and the care of the people who could be excluded. The sources of the research report point to his devotion to Mary Immaculate and to St. Joseph. The fact sheet retains this fact within Catholic spirituality: Mary is venerated as a mother and intercessor, while worship belongs only to God.

The tradition of the congregation keeps episodes about the preservation of notebooks, memories and testimonies during internal conflicts. When a story does not have sufficient contemporary document here, it is presented as a transmitted memory and not as a safe fact. No particular miracles or Marian revelations are attributed to Bonifacia which the sources consulted do not establish.

The mother house

Salamanca allows us to approach the legacy of a woman who understood religious life as a concrete service. The point of the map links with a living institution, not just a grave. His teaching can be summarized in an invitation: to work honestly, to protect those who have less resources and to make prayer a source of responsibility.

Salamanca, Zamora and a proven foundation

The story of Bonifacia includes Salamanca, where she was born and where the mother house was left, and Zamora, where she developed an important part of her life and died. The distance between the two places helps not to reduce it to a single direction. The map uses Salamanca because there the institutional memory and the tomb linked to the congregation are preserved; the tab keeps the other stages present without making them duplicate markers.

His work with women and workers was not an abstract idea. The workshops offered a form of learning and sustenance, and the foundation had to go through misunderstandings and conflicts. Canonization recognizes its Christian life, while historical research continues to distinguish documents, institutional testimonies and anecdotes transmitted. This distinction protects both the truth and the dignity of the saint.

Prayer

Santa Bonifacia Rodríguez, pray for the workers, for those who seek an opportunity and for the communities that educate and host. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us the humility of St. Joseph and perseverance in service. Amen.
