Santa María Bernarda Bütler

Santa María Bernarda Bütler, born Verena Bütler, was a Swiss Franciscan religious and missionary in Ecuador and Colombia. His life united contemplation, fidelity to the Church and care for the poor. He died in Cartagena de Indias in 1924 and was canonized by Benedict XVI in 2008. The point of this sheet represents the cartographed place of his memory in Cartagena, not an affirmation of every space he went through.

Where is he?

The tab is located in Cartagena de Indias, in the surroundings of the Biffi College. OpenStreetMap identifies the building as the way 1467182865 and Nominatim responded HTTP 200. The precision is verified_place: research there links the tomb or place of veneration, but the point does not aim to measure the interior of a burial or to replace the entire history of the congregation.

Documented history

Verena Bütler was born in Auw, in the Swiss canton of Argovia, on May 28, 1848. He grew up in a peasant and Christian family. The Eucharist has been at the heart of its spirituality since childhood. After discerning his vocation, he entered the Franciscan monastery of Mary Helper of Altstätten in 1867, taking the name of Sister Maria Bernarda of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1868 and professed in 1869.

For years, he has exercised training and government services within the community. In 1888 he accepted the invitation of Monsignor Pietro Schumacher, Bishop of Portoviejo, and left for Ecuador with six companions. In Chone he found a situation of pastoral and social poverty. With his sisters he dedicated himself to prayer, Christian formation, visits to families and works of mercy, seeking to know the language and culture of the people.

The mission was accompanied by poverty, difficult climate, health problems, misunderstandings and separations. In 1895, the persecution against the Church forced Maria Bernarda and her companions to leave Ecuador. They arrived in Colombia and Bishop Eugenio Biffi invited them to work in his diocese of Cartagena. On 2 August 1895 they were taken in a wing of the female hospital known as the Pia Work. That community became the center from which the congregation continued to spread.

Mary Bernarda led the congregation for thirty years. His biography retains his insistence on opening houses to the poor and marginalized and preferring the care of the destitute. He died on May 19, 1924 in Cartagena, aged seventy-six. His grave soon became a place of pilgrimage and prayer. John Paul II beatified it in 1995 and Benedict XVI inscribed it in the catalogue of the saints on October 12, 2008.

Marian Tradition and Devotion

Her religious name, Mary Bernarda of the Sacred Heart of Mary, expresses Mary's presence in her consecrated life. The congregation was placed under the protection of Mary Helper, who was venerated as Mother, Protector and model to follow Christ. This Marian devotion is presented as documented Catholic spirituality and worship, not as a personal apparition or as a supernatural fact attributed to the saint.

The history of his mission must also be read with its circumstances: poverty, displacement, disease, persecution and service. The veneration of his grave and the permanence of his religious are made of ecclesial memory; they do not authorize each edifying account to be turned into an independent test.

Ecclesial State

Santa María Bernarda Bütler is of the Catholic Church. It was beatified on 29 October 1995 and canonized on 12 October 2008. This state refers to its holiness recognized by the Church and not to the approval of Marian apparitions.

Anecdotes and stories

One of the most eloquent images of his career is the 1895 journey: a community expelled from Ecuador found in Cartagena a new place to serve. The reception in the female hospital links his missionary vocation with the care of the sick and the poor. The phrase that the biography puts in the mouth of the saint - to open houses to help the poor - sums up a criterion of action, not a quote that should be separated from its context.

Prayer

St. Mary Bernarda, pray for the missionaries, for those who leave their land and for the poor and sick. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us to serve with humility, to remain faithful to the Church and to lead everyone to Jesus Christ. Amen.
