Holy Narcissa of Jesus

Santa Narcisa of Jesus Martillo Moran was an Ecuadorian laica whose life was marked by prayer, work, catechesis and attention to the poor. He was born in San José de Nobol and died in Lima in 1869. The Church canonized it in 2008. This fact sheet distinguishes the documented history from the devotional tradition and does not make supernatural facts all the stories that have been transmitted about his body or his penitent life.

Where is he?

The point of the map corresponds to the National Catholic Sanctuary Santa Narcisa of Jesus, in Nogol, province of Guayas, Ecuador. OpenStreetMap identifies the sanctuary there as the way 265718180 and the Nominatim consultation responded HTTP 200. The precision is verified_building: the map building of the sanctuary has been located, not every place in Narcisa's life or the exact point of each episode of his history.

Documented history

Narcisa was born in 1832 at the San José de Nobol farm, in a deeply believing peasant family. It was the sixth of nine children. Her mother died when she was six and received her first training with the help of a teacher and her older sister. He learned to read and write, sing, play guitar, sew, weave, embroidery and cook. The manual work was not a secondary detail of his life: he became a seaman and put his skills at the service of his environment.

The biography published by the Holy See shows that it received the Confirmation in 1839 and that since young people it was seeking places of silence for prayer. In a sketch near his house and in a small room turned into an oratorio he cultivated an intense inner life. He also collaborated in domestic and rural work, taught the faith to the children of the neighborhood and helped the poor and the sick. His devotion did not separate it from ordinary responsibilities.

After his father's death in 1852, he moved to Guayaquil. There he lived in several houses to protect his privacy and continue his sewing work, his prayer and his service. In June 1868, advised by a Franciscan religious, he travelled to Lima and stayed as an internal selate in the Dominican convent of the Patrocino. He died on December 8, 1869, after a disease, at the age of thirty-seven.

The Vatican documentation shows that his remains were transferred to Guayaquil in 1955. The diocesan process reached the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 1964. John Paul II beatified it on 25 October 1992 and the shrine of Nobol was dedicated on 22 August 1998. Benedict XVI canonized it on 12 October 2008 together with Maria Bernarda Bütler and other figures of the universal Church.

Marian Tradition and Devotion

The biography presents it together with the Immaculate Conception: it died on December 8, after having finished a novena and participated in the Eucharistic celebration of that solemnity. This fact belongs to the history of his last day and explains part of the devotion that was consolidated in Nobol. Mary is venerated as Mother and intercessor; she does not love her, because worship corresponds only to God.

The Vatican source mentions signs of flexibility and fragrance in his body and thanks attributed to his intercession. Here the attribution is preserved as part of the biographical documentation and devotional memory, without presenting each account as an independent miracle or inventing a decree that does not appear in the sources consulted. Similarly, the sanctuary and the pilgrimages prove the existence of a cult and a living memory, not a Marian apparition.

Ecclesial State

Santa Narcisa of Jesus is of the Catholic Church. It was beatified in 1992 and canonized on 12 October 2008. Canonization recognizes his holiness according to the Church's process; it does not automatically certify all the popular explanations about his body, penance or graces received before his tomb.

Anecdotes and stories

His learning of sewing, music and domestic work helps to understand why Ecuadorian devotion reminds her of her as a close saint. History is not only made up of extraordinary experiences: also by catechesis, care for the sick, work and obedience to their spiritual directors. Nogol retains the main reference of that memory, although his life also passed in Guayaquil and Lima.

Prayer

Saint Narcisa of Jesus, pray for those who work with humility, for catechists, for the sick and for families who live in simplicity. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us to seek God in prayer and service, and to bring us to Jesus Christ. Amen.
