San Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez He was Archbishop of San Salvador and martyr of the Catholic Church. This chart places its memory and its tomb in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador. The point of the map identifies the map building; it does not intend to convert an urban coordinate into the exact location of each episode of its life. Saint Oscar is venerated and asked to intercede before God; worship corresponds only to God.

Documented history
Óscar Arnulfo Romero Galdámez was born in 1917 and exercised the episcopal ministry in El Salvador. He was Archbishop of San Salvador since 1977, in a period of political and social violence. His homilies and pastoral service insisted on the dignity of people, the defense of life and the responsibility of the Church in the face of the suffering of the poor. This historical memory does not make every phrase popularly attributed to Romero a literal quote: words must be read in their homilies and preserved documents.
On March 24, 1980, he was killed while celebrating the Eucharist. The Holy See recognizes him as a martyr and included him among the canonized Blessed on October 14, 2018. His canonization recognizes him as a saint to the Catholic Church; it does not depend on a Marian apparition or authorize him to present as a miracle any favor attributed to his intercession.
Its remains rest on the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral. The place also retains the memory of the funeral and the pilgrimages that, over the years, have come to pray before their mausoleum. The documented existence of the tomb and the devotion of the faithful are made different from the spiritual interpretation that each pilgrim makes of his prayer.
Tradition and Legend
The popular memory of Saint Oscar Romero brings together phrases, conversions and favors received by those who come to the crypt. Devotion can convey a true experience for the person who counts it, but not all these narrations are part of a canonical process. This fact sheet does not add dates, dialogues or miracles that are not supported by the sources mentioned.
The bronze monument of the crypt represents Romero in the dream of the righteous and shows the four evangelists in the vertices of the tombstone. It is an artistic and devotional work of the mausoleum, not a historical representation of the way he died. The tab retains that distinction so that the memory of the martyr does not become an invented scene.
Ecclesial State
San Óscar Arnulfo Romero es canonized and martyr saint of the Catholic Church. The Holy See held its canonization on 14 October 2018. His veneration and intercession belong to the liturgical life of the Church. The fact sheet does not affirm a Marian apparition in the crypt, nor does it attribute ecclesial approval to each private account of healing or conversion.
Anecdotes and stories
The crypt works as a place of memory: there meet faithful, communities and visitors to pray, remember Romero's ministry and ask for help to live the faith in the midst of violence. The Metropolitan Cathedral is also a central building of the religious heritage of San Salvador and has been the scene of celebrations that are part of the country's recent history.
Romero's martyrdom calls for the rejection of violence and the protection of the dignity of everyone. Their example should not be used to justify confrontation, persecution or revenge. The pilgrimage to his grave can be an occasion of prayer for peace, for the victims and for those who have public responsibilities, always oriented to Jesus Christ and to the love of others.
Prayer
Saint Oscar Romero, bishop and martyr, pray for the people of El Salvador, for those who suffer violence, for families who seek justice and for those who proclaim the Gospel with prudence and courage. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us to stay with those who suffer and to lead all our hope to Jesus Christ. Amen.
