Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, S. J. He was a Jesuit Mexican priest and martyr of religious persecution. This document places its memory in the Parish of the Word Encarnado and the Sagrada Familia, in the Rome colony of Mexico City, without turning the marker into an affirmation on every path of its clandestine ministry. The Blessed is honored and asked for intercession before God; worship is only for God.
Where is he?
The point is located in the Parish of the Word Encarnado and the Sagrada Familia, on the street Puebla of the Colony Rome, Mexico City. OpenStreetMap identifies the building via the track 1420811551 and offers the reference 19.4223, -99.1614. The precision is verified_building: represents the cartographed temple linked to the memory of the Blessed, not all the places where he exercised his ministry.
The location is understood in the history of the 20th century Mexican Catholic Church. The building retains the memory of Miguel Agustín Pro and allows to link the account of his life, his priestly service and his martyrdom to a specific place, without presenting an urban coordinate as if it were an independent test of every biographical detail.
Documented history
Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez was born in Mexico and entered the Society of Jesus. Religious persecution and restrictions against Catholic worship forced him to develop much of his priestly service under clandestine conditions. The pontifical documentation presents him as a Jesuit priest and witness to the faith in a period of strong conflict between the civil authorities and the Church.
After his priestly ordination he returned to Mexico and attended sacramentally to the faithful who could not meet freely. The clandestine ministry should not be confused with a license to expose itself without prudence: the circumstances were of persecution, and the lives of people, confidentiality and pastoral care were part of the responsibility of those who served the community.
On 23 November 1927, he was executed without an ordinary judicial process. The Government spread images of the execution, which became one of the best known episodes of Mexican religious persecution. The Church recognized his martyrdom and John Paul II beatified him on September 25, 1988. Beatification presents it as martir beatoHe should not be called a canonized saint.
Tradition and Legend
The devotional memory retains accounts of their movements, costumes and ways of celebrating the sacraments during the persecution. Some episodes appear in biographies and subsequent testimonies, but do not expand here with conversations, dates or scenes that are not in the sources used. The veneration of the Blessed does not require making every popular anecdote a documented fact.
The photographs of his execution are part of the public history of his martyrdom, but suffering should not be presented as a spectacle. The Church honors the fidelity of the victim and rejects the violence that was imposed on her. Mardom is not an invitation to seek danger or to legitimize the persecution of anyone.
Ecclesial State
Miguel Agustín Pro es martir beato of the Catholic Church, beatified by John Paul II in 1988. Beatification authorizes and maintains its veneration in the relevant field, but does not amount to universal canonization. This fact sheet does not attribute to his life an undocumented Marian apparition or miracle; it describes his ecclesial recognition as a martyr.
Anecdotes and stories
His figure allows us to remember that the Mexican Church survived persecution through priests, religious and lay people who maintained prayer and sacraments in difficult circumstances. It also invites a distinction between the spiritual value of a martyrdom memory and the historical accuracy of each account transmitted by devotion.
The parish of the Holy Family functions as a place of memory associated with its burial and veneration. The marker points to that building and does not intend to place all Pro's activities in it or reduce its life to one direction. The urban context of the Rome colony is part of the current location; the history of the underground ministry covered other places.
Prayer
Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro, a Jesuit priest and martyr, pray for those who proclaim the Gospel in situations of persecution, for families injured by violence and for those who seek the truth. He asks the Virgin Mary to teach us prudent fidelity and to lead us always to Jesus Christ. Amen.
