San Pedro to Rot was a catechist and father of the family in Rakunai on the island of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. He died martyr in 1945 during the Japanese occupation and was canonized on October 19, 2025. This tab presents the place of your life and memory with precise location, without turning the marker into a supposed GPS inside the grave.
Where is he?
Rakunai is located in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. OpenStreetMap identifies the location by the node 7881717489 and offers as a reference -4.2753, 152.1238. The precision is locality: the coordinate places Rakunai, a place linked to life, to the catechumenate and to the memory of Peter to Rot, but does not on its own determine the exact point of his burial or of each mission building.
The choice of Rakunai is not a national center. The sources of the Holy See call Pedro To Rot a catechist of that town and relate their service to the community there. The map retains this historical reference and leaves open a possible improvement if the diocese publishes an unequivocal geometry of the sanctuary or the grave.
Documented history
Pedro To Rot was born in 1912 in Rakunai. It was formed for the apostolate of catechists and in 1933 it began to exercise this service in its locality. In 1936 he married Paula la Varpit; they had three children. The history of his life is not that of an ordained religious, but that of a secular, husband, father and catechist who held the Christian community when foreign priests were removed.
During the Japanese occupation of New Britain in World War II, European missionaries were interned and restrictions on Christian life increased. Peter continued to bring together the faithful for prayer and catechesis. The Vatican source of its canonization explains that it built an underground shelter and continued to serve the community despite the risk.
He also defended the unity and dignity of marriage against the polygamy that the occupation authorities tried to legalize to gain support. He was arrested and sentenced to two months in prison. In July 1945 he died of a lethal injection, according to Vatican liturgical documentation. The Church recognized his martyrdom: John Paul II beatified him in Port Moresby on 17 January 1995, and Leo XIV canonized him in Rome on 19 October 2025.
Tradition and memory
The community of Rakunai preserved from the beginning the memory of his death as martyrdom. This memory is expressed in veneration, catechesis and pilgrimage. There is no need to add extraordinary cures, apparitions or episodes to understand the importance of testimony: pontifical sources document their service, family, persecution and canonical recognition.
The 2025 canonization updates the ecclesial state that appeared in the 2024 research report. That's why this fact sheet calls it St Peter to Rot and not just Blessed. The recent date is accurately stated so as not to repeat the previous state of the research material.
Ecclesial State
San Pedro to Rot es Holy martyr canonized of the Catholic Church. His canonization recognizes his worship according to the rules of the Church, but does not make supernatural facts all devotional narrations that can circulate on his grave. There is no Marian apparition associated with his life. The Christian prayer asks for his intercession before God and can also ask for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, who leads to Christ.
Anecdotes and stories
The story of Pedro To Rot recalls that the life of a local Church can be sustained through catechists and families when priests are missing. His service was not an isolated activity: he was linked to prayer, the possible celebration of faith and the responsibility to accompany a community under military occupation.
The fact that he was husband and father makes especially visible the secular dimension of his holiness. The Church does not present him as a hero separated from his people, but as a catechist of Rakunai who defended the faith and dignity of marriage. The marker points to this location and does not intend to set all the steps of its mission during the war.
Prayer
San Pedro To Rot, a catechist, husband, father and martyr, pray for families, catechists and communities that live their faith in the midst of persecution. He asks the Virgin Mary to support us in hope and to lead us always to Jesus Christ. Amen.
To Rot's testimony is better understood if his family life and ecclesial service are kept together. Catechesis was not a separate activity from his responsibility as a husband and father: precisely from that ordinary life he took on the task of accompanying the Christians of Rakunai when the war disorganized the mission. The 2025 canonization does not erase the previous stages of the case, but culminates in the recognition initiated with the 1995 martyrdom decree and the beatification.
The pontifical sources also allow to distinguish the memory of martyrdom from an exhaustive reconstruction of its last days. It consists of imprisonment, conviction and death by lethal injection, but no names of witnesses, schedules, journeys or details of the grave are added that do not appear in the archived sources. The town of Rakunai is sufficient to guide the map without claiming an accuracy that is not yet documented.
