San Pedro Calungsod and Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores they are united in Guam's Catholic memory by the martyrdom suffered during the mission on the Mariana Islands. This sheet presents the documented history and memory place of Matå'pang / Tomhom without turning a territorial coordinate into a precision that sources do not offer. Martyrs are asked for intercession; worship belongs only to God.
Where is he?
The point is located in the Matå'pang area of Tumon, Guam. OpenStreetMap identifies Matapang Beach Park via the track 555973167 and returns as reference 13.5073, 144.7994. The precision is locality: the marker allows to find the area associated with the memory of martyrdom, but does not claim that the geometric point of the park is the exact place of each episode of 1672.
The location should be read along with the history of Tomhom and the evangelization of the Chamorros. The current space, its administrative names and devotional places are not just identical to the geography of the 17th century. This is why a prudent reference is retained and an inner coordinate of a sanctuary, a grave or remains not recovered is not invented.
Documented history
Diego Luis de San Vitores was a Spanish Jesuit who arrived in the Mariana Islands in 1668 and carried out a mission there among the Chamorros. The Holy See recalls him as a missionary and martyr of Guam. In 1672, during a visit to Tomhom, he and catechist Pedro Calungsod tried to administer baptism to a sick girl. The conflict with part of the population led to the attack that caused the death of both.
Pedro Calungsod was a young catechist from the Visayas. He accompanied San Vitores in the mission and participated in the catechesis and administration of the sacraments. The Vatican liturgical narrative conserves that, when the attackers attacked the missionary, Calungsod may have tried to flee, but remained with him. Both died on 2 April 1672 and their remains were not recovered.
The Church recognized the martyrdom of Diego Luis de San Vitores and beatified him on 6 October 1985. Pedro Calungsod was beatified in 2000 and canonized by Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012. The canonization of Calungsod and the beatification of Saint Vitores are different ecclesial facts: one is canonized saint and the other remains blessed. The tab keeps that difference.
Tradition and limits
The local tradition retains the memory of the mission, the baptism of the girl and the death of the two witnesses. Tradition helps to understand why Matå'pang and Guam are important places for the Catholic community, but does not authorize adding details that are not reflected in the documents used. There is no Marian apparition here either: the research report does not provide an approved Marian phenomenon associated with this martyrdom.
The absence of recovered relics is also part of history. It should not be replaced by a legend presented as a fact. The pilgrimage and veneration of the martyrs express the faith of the Church; they do not turn every local account on the ground into an archaeological test.
Ecclesial State
St. Calungsod es Holy martyr canonized of the Catholic Church. Diego Luis de San Vitores es martir beato, beatified by the Catholic Church. The point of the map and the tab refer to that Catholic memory and do not attribute to Guam an approval of Marian apparitions. Mary appears in prayer as a mother and intercessor that leads to Jesus Christ, not as an object of worship.
Anecdotes and stories
The relationship between a missionary and a catechist shows that evangelization was not the work of a single figure. Calungsod, a lay young man in the service of the mission, was forever joined to San Vitores in Guam's testimony. The memory of both allows us to tell the history of the local Church including a missionary priest and an Asian catechist, without erasing the differences of origin, ministry and canonical recognition.
The marker represents the area of Matå'pang / Tumon and not all mission locations in the Marianas. The island, the mission and the routes of the evangelizers form a broader historical framework than the point of the map. This limitation is expressly preserved so that geolocation is useful without pretending accuracy.
Prayer
St. Peter Calungsod and Blessed Diego Luis of Saint Vitores, witnesses to the Gospel and martyrs in the Marianas, pray for catechists, missionaries and the people of Guam. Ask the Virgin Mary to teach us to serve Jesus Christ with humility, respect and charity. Amen.
Guam's memory also requires careful appointment of the persons involved. The Vatican liturgical source presents Calungsod as a catechist of the Visayas and San Vitores as a Spanish Jesuit priest. Both belong to the same missionary history, but should not be merged into a single biography. Calungsod was not a priest and San Vitores was not a local catechist: the document retains the complementarity of its services.
The mission took place in a context of encounter, cultural translation, conflict and violence. History is not presented as a story without tension, nor are collective intentions attributed to the entire Chamorro people by the acts of some aggressors. Beatification and canonization refer to the specific witnesses recognized by the Church, not to a historical condemnation of an entire population.
