History of Marian devotion in Andorra
Andorra, the small principality of the Pyrenees, has in the Virgin of Meritxell its national patron, declared such in 1873 by Pope Pius IX. Tradition tells that the image was found in the 12th century under a wild rose in flower (a "meritxell," hence its name) in the middle of winter, which was considered a miracle. The original, Romanesque sanctuary was destroyed by a fire in 1972; the new sanctuary, designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill and opened in 1976, is a masterpiece of contemporary religious architecture.
In addition to Meritxell, Andorra venerates the Virgin of Canolic in the parish of Sant Julia de Loria, whose twelfth-century hermitage is one of the treasures of the Andorran Romanesque. The Virgin of the Fish (of the Fish) in Encamp is another traditional advocation. The devotion to the Virgin of Ecology in Juberri represents a modern interpretation of Marian piety, linked to the protection of the environment.
