History of Marian devotion in Denmark
Denmark, a European country of Christian tradition, has a Marian history that reflects the vicissitudes of its national history. Devotion to the Virgin Mary has been a central element of popular piety, expressed in shrines, hermites and chapels that spatter its geography. Local Marian advocacy is a testimony to a faith that has accompanied the people through the centuries.
Although religious practice has decreased in the last decades, the Marian shrines of Denmark remain places of pilgrimage and spiritual encounter. The Virgin Mary is venerated under various advocacy that reflect both the Latin tradition and the cultural influences of the country.
Today the Catholic Church in Denmark is a small minority (approximately 0.7% of the population), but it has a dynamic and diverse life of faith, enriched by Catholic immigration from Poland, the Philippines, Vietnam and Latin America. The Catholic diocese of Copenhagen covers the whole country, with parishes in the main cities. The Cathedral of San Ansgar in Copenhagen is the center of Danish Catholicism. The Virgin Mary is especially venerated as Our Lady of Copenhagen (Vor Frue) and under the auspices of Fatima and Lourdes in the parishes of the capital and Aarhus.
