History of Marian devotion in Guinea

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Guinea, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Guinea, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

Marian devotion in the Republic of Guinea

Guinea, known as the "Switzerland of Africa" for its mountains and landscapes, was evangelized by French missionaries of the Holy Spirit in the late 19th century. The Catholic Church in Guinea is a minority (approximately 10 per cent of the population) in a Muslim-majority country, but has a significant presence in the coastal regions and in the capital, Conakry. The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Conakry, built in 1928 by the parents of the Holy Spirit, is the country's main Catholic temple. Its Neo-Moromanic façade of grey stone and its Marian blue stained vitrals make it one of the most emblematic buildings in the capital. The image of Our Lady of Conakry, a French size of the 19th century, is venerated as a protector of the city.

The history of the Church in Guinea is marked by persecution during the Sékou Touré regime (1958-1984), which expelled foreign missionaries and nationalized Catholic schools. Despite this, Guinean catechists kept the faith alive, gathered around the Virgin Mary. The Rosary became the center of the spiritual life of the communities that met in secret. After the death of Touré, the Church experienced a rebirth. Today, the feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is celebrated with great joy in Conakry, with a procession that runs through the streets of the capital to the cathedral, where thousands of faithful gather to honor the Virgin Mary.

The image of Our Lady of the Rosary, a size of ebony donated by the Church of Côte d'Ivoire, represents the Virgin with the Rosary in her hands, dressed in a traditional African suit. Every 7 October, the patron party is celebrated with polyphonic songs in Malinké language and a procession on the streets of Kankan.
