Solomon Islands

History of Marian devotion in Solomon Islands

Christianity reached the islands of Solomon Islands by the hand of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocacy in Solomon Islands reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

The Virgin Mary in the Archipelago of Solomon

Solomon Islands were evangelized mainly by French Marist missionaries from 1845, although Catholicism was not consolidated until the end of the 19th century due to the difficulties of the land, tropical diseases and the resistance of some tribes. The Virgin Mary was presented to the Melanesians as a powerful maternal figure, and her devotion quickly spread over the islands of Guadalcanal, Malaita, Makira and the western islands. The archdiocese of Honiara is based in the Cathedral of the Holy Rosary, built in the 1960s with a design that incorporates traditional architectural elements of Solomon, such as the straw roof and the wooden columns carved with Marian motifs.

The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalcanal, patron of the Solomon Islands, has a special meaning for the country. During World War II, the brutal Guadalcanal campaign (1942-1943) caused enormous suffering to the local population. The missionaries who remained on the island during the war testified that the Melanesian Catholics prayed the Rosary incessantly asking for the protection of the Virgin. After the war, devotion to the Virgin of Guadalcanal intensified, and on 8 September (Nativity of Mary) was established as her patron feast. Every year, thousands of pilgrims from all the islands go to the cathedral of Honiara for the celebration, which includes traditional dances, songs in the vernacular languages and a procession that runs through the promenade of the capital.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Gizo

Party: 11 February · Place: Gizo (Western Province, Solomon Islands)

On the island of Gizo, the capital of the Western Province, the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes is the center of the Catholic community of the Western Solomon Islands. The church was built in 1958 by the Marists and is known for its Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, built with white coralina rock and sea shells, which is a popular place of pilgrimage. The Catholic community of Gizo, composed mainly of fishermen and farmers, celebrates every 11 February with a solemn mass followed by a canoe procession through the lagoon, in which the image of the Virgin is transported from island to island, visiting the Catholic communities scattered by the New Georgia archipelago.

"Our Lady of Lourdes of Gizo, pray for us.

Immaculate Conception of Auki

Party: 8 December · Place: Auki (Malaita, Islas Salosón)

In Auki, the capital of the island of Malaita, the parish of the Immaculate Conception serves one of the most numerous Catholic communities in the country. The present church was consecrated in 1971 and replaced a wooden chapel built by the first missionaries in 1910. The temple is distinguished by its local wood stems that represent the mysteries of the Rosary with melanesian features, and by its bamboo bell tower that calls the faithful to prayer. The feast of the Immaculate Conception is the most important celebration of Malaita, with traditional dances, polyphonic songs and a large community banquet that brings together Catholics from all over the island, including those who must travel for days from the mountainous areas of the interior.

"Immaculate Conception of Auki, pray for us.

Solomon Islands had suffered decades of ethnic tensions and conflicts, especially between 1998 and 2003 in Guadalcanal. The Catholic Church, led by the Archbishop of Honiara, played a crucial role in the peace process. The Virgin Mary, called Our Lady of Reconciliation, was presented as a model of forgiveness and healing. The cathedral of the Holy Rosary of Honiara held historic meetings of reconciliation between the opposing factions, and the image of the Virgin of the Rosary presided over these meetings. The feast of Our Lady of Guadalcanal (8 September) is today a celebration of the peace recovered and a reminder of Mary's role in healing the wounds of the country.

The Catholic community of Solomon Islands is currently preparing to celebrate the centenary of the diocese of Honiara in 2027. As part of this preparation, a "Marian Year" has been initiated in all parishes, with the motto "Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us." Each month it is dedicated to a different Marian advocation, beginning with Our Lady of Guadalcanal in January and ending with the Immaculate Conception in December. This initiative has revitalized the faith of the Catholic communities scattered over the more than 900 islands of the archipelago, uniting the faithful in the same filial love of the Virgin Mary.
