The Iglesia ortodoxa eritrea

Eritrea is a country with a rich Christian tradition dating back to the fourth century, when the Kingdom of Aksum adopted Christianity as an official religion. The Eritrean Orthodox Church Tewahedo separated from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in 1993, following Ethiopia's independence, although both share liturgy, theology and devotions. Orthodox Christians make up about 50% of the Eritrean population.

The title Kidane Mihret in Eritrea

The title Kidane Mihret ("Covenant of Mercy") designates the intercession of Mary before Christ for sinners. According to tradition, Jesus made a covenant with his mother: anyone who invokes the name of Mary will receive mercy. This devotion is especially popular in Eritrea and Ethiopia, where many churches bear this name. The Kidane Mehret Cathedral in Asmara is the main church of this advocation in Eritrea.

The Christian Faith in Eritrea

"The Covenant of Mercy is Christ's promise to his mother: whoever invokes your name, I will forgive him."
