History of Marian devotion in Sudan

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Sudan, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Sudan, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

Mary in the land of the Sudanese martyrs

Sudan, the largest country in Africa until the independence of South Sudan in 2011, has a history of Marian faith forged in suffering and persecution. The Catholic Church in Sudan is a minority (approximately 5 per cent of the population) and has faced decades of discrimination and violence under Islamic governments. However, devotion to the Virgin Mary has remained firm, fed by the work of Saint Daniel Comboni and the Common missionaries. The archdiocese of Khartoum, with its cathedral of St. Matthew (which has a Marian chapel), and the diocese of El Obeid, with its cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, are the two main centers of Catholic life in the country.

The history of Sudanese Catholics is full of testimonies of heroic faith. During the years of persecution, especially under the regime of Omar al-Bashir (1989- 2019), Catholics gathered in secret to pray the Rosary, and the images of the Virgin were hidden to avoid its destruction. Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited Sudan in 1988 and encouraged Catholics to keep her devotion to Mary alive as a source of strength. After the 2019 revolution and the transition to a civil government, the Catholic Church has restored spaces of freedom. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) is celebrated in Khartoum with a procession that runs through the streets of the capital, in a gesture of public faith that was unthinkable during the years of persecution.

Our Lady of the Perpetual Relief of Khartoum

Party: 27 June · Place: Jartum (Sudan, Sudan)

In Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief is one of the most active centers of the Catholic community. The church was built in 1950 by the Common missionaries and is known for its impressive icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, a reproduction of the original Byzantine icon that was donated by Pope Pius XII. The parish serves a multicultural community of South Sudanese (pre-independence), Eritreans, Ethiopians and Filipinos. Every 27 June, the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief brings together faithful from all over the archdiocese for a solemn mass concelebrated by the archbishop, followed by a procession with candles.

"Our Lady of the Perpetual Help of Khartoum, pray for us.

Immaculate Conception of Port Sudan

Party: 8 December · Place: Port Sudan (Red Sea, Sudan)

In Port Sudan, the main port city of Sudan on the banks of the Red Sea, the parish of the Immaculate Conception serves the Catholic community of the region. The church was built in 1938 by the Comonian missionaries to serve the port workers and sailors of various nationalities. The building, of Italian colonial style with slammed walls and a bell tower of arches, has resisted the passage of time and the climate. The image of the Immaculate Conception, a size of wood brought from Italy, presides over the altar. The Catholic community of Port Sudan, though small, keeps the faith alive with the daily prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the great Marian parties.

"Immaculate Conception of Port Sudan, pray for us.

Despite the difficulties, the Catholic community in Sudan maintains an active life of prayer and service. The Combonian Sisters and Missionaries of Mother Teresa's Charity are present in the country, serving the poor and sick in Mary's name. The school of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief in Khartoum has educated generations of Sudanese, regardless of their religion, as a model of interreligious coexistence. The Virgin Mary is also respected by the Sudanese Muslims, who venerate her as Maryam, the mother of the prophet Isa (Jesus), and go to Christian celebrations in her honor as a sign of respect and friendship.

The archdiocese of Khartoum, the largest in Sudan, covers a vast territory from the capital to the borders with Egypt and Libya. Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako, the Archbishop, has tirelessly promoted Marian devotion as a source of unity and peace in a country divided by war and religion. The Cathedral of San Mateo in Khartoum, although dedicated to the evangelist, has an impressive Marian chapel where Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, patron of Sudan, is venerated. The image, a reproduction of the Byzantine icon, was crowned in 2005 by Cardinal Wako in a gesture of consecration of the country to the protection of Mary.
