History of Marian devotion in Tonga

Christianity reached the islands of Tonga by the hand of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocacy in Tonga reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

Mary in the Kingdom of Tonga

Marian piety in Tonga is expressed in a unique way through coral music, one of the most beloved traditions in the country. Each Catholic parish has its own choir that interprets Marian hymns in tongano during liturgical celebrations. The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is the most important Marian celebration of the year, and brings together Catholics from all the islands in Nukualofa for a solemn concelebrated mass and a Marian music festival that lasts all day. The evening procession, in which the faithful carry candles and sing the Rosary in tongano, runs the streets of the capital until they reach the port, where the bishop blesses the waters and the ships.

Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Vava’u

Party: 7 October · Place: Neiafu (Vava’u, Tonga)

Party: 11 February · Place: Pangai (Ha’apai, Tonga)

The Catholic community of Tonga, although a minority in a Methodist majority, maintains an active and respected presence. The Tongan royal family has historically maintained good relations with the Catholic Church: King George Tupou II donated the land for the cathedral of Nukualofa, and Queen Salote Tupou III attended the consecration of the cathedral in 1966. The Virgin Mary, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is venerated as the patron of the kingdom, and her feast on December 8 is celebrated with a real procession that runs through the streets of Nukualofa, in which civil and ecclesiastical authorities participate.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Nukualofa was consecrated in 1966 by Cardinal Janani Luwum, special envoy of Pope Paul VI. The cathedral, built with white coral and nobles of Tonga, is one of the most emblematic buildings in the Pacific. Its main altar, carved in a single piece of toa wood (Casuarina equisetifolia), represents the Virgin Mary as Queen of the Pacific, surrounded by flowers of frangipani and palm leaves. The image of the Immaculate Conception, a ivory size donated by Pope Paul VI, presides over the altar and is the subject of special veneration during the month of May.
