Origin and history

In the late 19th century, two Maronite prelates designed to erect a great Marian monument on Harissa hill, dominating the Jounieh Bay, dedicated to the Virgin under the title of Our Lady of Lebanon, Mother and Protector of the nation. The statue, founded in France in bronze and painted in white, measures about nine meters and rises on a stone tower.

The sanctuary was opened on the first Sunday of May 1908, when the Day of Our Lady of Lebanon began to be celebrated in all the churches of the country. At that inaugural mass, the Maronite Patriarchate proclaimed the Virgin "Queen of Lebanon." Since then, Harissa is a national centre for pilgrimages and a sign of unity for Christians - and also for many Muslims who worship Mary.

"Our Lady of Lebanon, Queen of this land, pray for us and grant peace to Lebanon."
The Maronite Church is in full communion with Rome. Up to the statue and around its base praying is one of the most typical gestures of this devotion.
