History of Marian devotion in Zimbabwe
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Zimbabwe, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.
In Zimbabwe, the Virgin is venerated under various advocacy, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

The Virgin Mary in the land of Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe, the former Rhodesia, has a significant Catholic community (approximately 10% of the population) that has been rooted in the missionary work of the Jesuits and the Marist Brothers since the 19th century. The Virgin Mary is venerated in numerous shrines and pilgrimage groups that splash the country, especially in the region of Mashonaland and Matabeleland. The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption in the diocese of Gweru and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the hills of Mhondoro are places of spiritual encounter where the faithful come to seek the intercession of the Virgin. Marian devotion in Zimbabwe has a strong component of inculturation, with hymns and prayers in the Shona and Ndebele languages.
One of the most notable aspects of Zimbabwean Marian piety is the tradition of night pilgrimages, during which the faithful walk for miles singing the Rosary and praising Mary. The Episcopal Conference of Zimbabwe has declared the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption in the diocese of Masvingo as a place of national pilgrimage. Every year, on August 15, thousands of faithful gather there to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin, in one of the most multitudes of faith in the country. The image of the Virgin of Zimbabwe, represented as an African mother with the Child Jesus, is a symbol of identity for the Catholics of the country.
Our Lady of the Assumption of Gweru
The Cathedral of Gweru, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, is the seat of the diocese of Gweru and an important Marian center in the centre of Zimbabwe. Built in 1940 by the Jesuits, the cathedral is a Romanesque-style building with local granite walls and an interior decorated with glass windows that represent the glorious mysteries of the Rosary. The image of Our Lady of the Assumption, a size of alabaster brought from Italy, presides over the main altar. The feast of August 15 is the most important celebration of the diocese, with a procession that runs through the streets of Gweru and a missionary fair that raises funds for rural parishes.

Our Lady of Lourdes of Mhondoro
In the hills of Mhondoro, about 80 kilometres west of Harare, there is a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes which is an important pilgrimage place for Zimbabwean Catholics. The grotto was discovered in 1946 by a local catechist who, while praying the Rosary, found a natural cavity in the rock that reminded him of the Grotto of Massabielle. With the help of the Jesuit missionaries, a sanctuary was built around the Grotto, which was blessed in 1948. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes, a white marble size brought from France, was installed in the grotto in 1950. Every February 11, thousands of pilgrims from all over Zimbabwe come to Mhondoro to pray and ask for the intercession of the Virgin.

The Catholic Church in Zimbabwe has faced significant challenges during the country's economic and political crisis. Despite the difficulties, Marian devotion has remained firm. The sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption in Gweru and the Grotto of Lourdes in Mhondoro are places of pilgrimage where the faithful come to seek spiritual comfort and material help. The Virgin Mary is invoked in Zimbabwe as "Mai Mary" (Mother Mary) in Shona, and her intercession is especially sought for the healing of the sick and the provision of daily needs. The prayer of the Rosary in families is a widespread practice.
The Zimbabwean Catholic community has experienced a Marian renaissance in recent decades thanks to the Schoenstatt movement, which has several branch shrines in the country. The Shrine of Schoenstatt of Mary Queen of Peace in Harare, founded in 1998, is a centre of Marian spirituality that attracts thousands of faithful each year. The Virgin Mary, under the title of the Mater Ter Admirabilis (Mother Three Lovable Times), is venerated in these shrines as an educator and formator of the Christian people. Schoenstatt's spirituality has revitalized Marian devotion in Zimbabwe, especially among families and young people.
The archdiocese of Harare, erected in 1955, covers the capital of Zimbabwe and its surroundings. Archbishop Robert Ndlovu has promoted devotion to Our Lady of Assumption as the country's patron. The feast of August 15 is held in the cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Harare with a procession that runs through the streets of the capital, followed by a missionary fair that raises funds for the poorest parishes. The image of Our Lady of the Assumption, a size of teak wood brought from Portugal, presides over the Marian chapel of the cathedral. The archdiocese celebrates the "Mes Mariano" every year in May, with processions and floral coronations in all parishes.
