The devotion was then bound up with two episodes that the memory of New Orleans keeps with affection. The first, a great fire dated from the tradition of the sanctuary in 1812: with the fire approaching the convent, the religious took the image to a high window and begged it to stop; the wind changed and the flames did not come. The second, on the eve of the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, when the Ursulins and the faithful watched in prayer asking for the city, and during the Mass of thanksgiving a messenger broke in announcing the victory.

What is certain is the ecclesial recognition of devotion. In 1928 Pope Pius XI proclaimed Our Lady of the Early Relief as the main patron of the state of Louisiana, and the place is today National Shrine recognized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Every 8 January the ninth and the celebration that link the advocation to that vigil of 1815 is renewed.

The link with the Rosary is not born from an explicit revelation, as in Fatima, but from the ordinary devotional practice: novias, litanies and Rosary prayed to the image, especially around January 8 and in the Uruguayan schools, where generations of children learned to ask the Virgin for a help to come soon.
