High above Pátzcuaro, atop an ancient Purépecha foundation, stands the Basilica of Our Lady of Health. There, an image of the Virgin Mary, closely linked to the indigenous world of Michoacán, is venerated. It was commissioned by Vasco de Quiroga, the region's first bishop, for the Santa Marta hospital, which he founded to care for the sick.

The statue is made of cornstalk paste, an indigenous technique that produced lightweight and durable images, crafted by Purépecha artisans. Don Vasco gave it the Latin title Salus Infirmorum, "Health of the Sick." Over time, due to the numerous healings attributed to it by the people, it became known simply as Our Lady of Health. Today, it is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Morelia and of Pastoral Care for the Sick in Mexico.

Cuentan que el 22 de diciembre de 1962 un hombre disparó diez balazos contra la imagen, y que las balas se desviaron sin dañarla; en la basílica se conservan el rifle y los cristales con las huellas de los impactos.

Let us distinguish carefully. The commission by Vasco de Quiroga, the use of cornstalks, the title Salus Infirmorum (Health of the Sick), and its veneration since the 16th century as one of the first Marian images made in the Americas are all documented. The exact dates (commissioned around 1536, public veneration in 1540) come from local tradition and popular accounts, without accessible archival records: strictly speaking, they are not precisely recorded. The "miracle of the bullets" of 1962 is a deeply rooted devotional tradition, based on preserved objects; however, there is no public expert report, so the explanation of why the image was not damaged remains within the realm of faith.

Regarding the Rosary, there is no specific historical link between this Marian devotion and the Rosary that distinguishes it from other Marian devotions. It is true, however, that the Rosary is frequently prayed before the image, as a common practice in Mexican piety.

Es hecho documentado el encargo de Vasco de Quiroga, el material de caña de maíz y el culto desde el siglo XVI; son tradición devocional o no plenamente documentadas las fechas exactas de 1536-1540 y el milagro de las balas de 1962.
