On a hill that dominates the Danube Valley, in Lower Austria, one of the great Marian shrines of the country rises, comparable in its fame to Mariazell. His name itself keeps the memory of his origin: Maria Taferl, where "Taferl" means "tablet." It is Our Lady of Mary Taferl, an imposing Baroque group of pilgrimage that today belongs to the diocese of Sankt Pölten.

The name says everything: a small tablet with the image of the Virgin, nailed into a tree of the road.

The tradition behind the sanctuary is one of those who fall in love with their rural simplicity. He says that devotion was born from an image of the Virgin placed in an oak, a small tablet before which the people of the place began to pray; and that the favors and wonders attributed to that image of the tree - healing, saving falls and accidents - moved first to build a chapel and, later, the great basilica that today is seen from afar. Maria Taferl is recognized in Austria as a great place of Marian pilgrimage, with a long tradition of devotees that has marked the religious life of the whole region.

It is important, however, to make a careful distinction. What can be stated with certainty is the existence and national importance of the pilgrimage basilica, its recognition as a Marian shrine, and the presence of votive offerings that testify to the gratitude of generations of the faithful. On the other hand, the precise account of the initial miracle—the names of those involved, the date of the first miracle, the exact circumstances of the image appearing on the tree—belongs to the realm of tradition and legend, and is not recorded with datable detail in the verifiable sources. The prudent approach is to present the origin of the shrine as a local tradition, without attributing dates or names that cannot be substantiated.
