The Virgin who floated to Miscou

Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary

The Virgin who floated to Miscou

Miscou Island (Canada) (19th century)

On Miscou Island, at the northeastern tip of New Brunswick, a Marian devotion with Acadian roots has long thrived, a tradition rooted in the French-speaking Atlantic community so deeply connected to the sea and its faith. And the island's history holds a beautiful story about how the Virgin Mary arrived there.

It is said that, around the middle of the 19th century, some fishermen from Miscou found a small image of the Virgin Mary floating near the shore, under circumstances they considered providential. They took it to the chapel, and that image became the heart of the Marian devotion of the fishermen and their families. They began to organize processions and pilgrimages on the Feast of the Assumption, whom they considered the protector of the community, and before the image they placed votive offerings from the sea—engraved names, small objects from the sea—in thanksgiving for rescues at sea.

El mar, que tantas veces se llevaba a los hombres, esta vez devolvió a la Madre.

It is important to distinguish, with both care and rigor, the two layers of the story. What is documented is that in Miscou there was a historical devotion to Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption among the Acadians, especially fishermen, with pilgrimages on August 15th and the presence of sailors' votive offerings. In contrast, the episode of the discovery "floating in the sea" is a narrative preserved in local memory and in studies on Acadian religiosity; there is no contemporary parish record that certifies the details, and there is no primary written documentation of the event or an exact date.

Whether it's history or a pious memory, it says a lot about a people who lived off the sea and who learned to see in those waters not only danger, but also the closeness of a Mother.
