Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
"Our Lady of Kibeho: the Mother of the Word who wept for Rwanda"
In southern Rwanda, in the Diocese of Gikongoro, the Kibeho boarding school was the site, beginning on November 28, 1981, of Marian apparitions that the Church would later recognize as the first officially approved in Africa. The Virgin Mary presented herself as "Nyina wa Jambo," the Mother of the Word, and there she is also venerated as Our Lady of Sorrows.
The first visionary was sixteen-year-old Alphonsine Mumureke. She was joined by Nathalie Mukamazimpaka in January 1982, and Marie Claire Mukangango in March of the same year. The messages emphasized conversion, sincere prayer, penance, and preparation for an encounter with Christ, with strong warnings about the dangers of hatred and violence.
Twelve years later, in 1994, Rwanda suffered a horrific genocide. Many have interpreted those visions as prophetic foreshadowings of the tragedy. It's important to be precise: what is documented is that the young women described scenes of violence years earlier; the prophetic interpretation, their precise connection to the genocide, is a later theological interpretation.
The Church examined the case for years with a commission of theologians and doctors. On August 15, 1988, Bishop Jean Baptiste Gahamanyi dedicated the site as the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows, and on June 29, 2001, Bishop Augustin Misago declared the authenticity of the three visionaries' visions. The "spiritual fruits" mentioned in so many works (conversions, reconciliations) are devotional tradition supported by testimonies, not systematic academic studies.
