History

Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Father Junípero Serra in 1776. It is known as the "jewel of the missions" for its architectural beauty. The Great Stone Church (Stone Church), built in 1806, is considered the masterpiece of mission architecture. It was declared a minor basilica in 2000. The swallows that return to the mission every March are a famous tradition.
