History of Marian devotion in Benin

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Benin, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

Our Lady of Arigbo, Marian Heart of Benin

Benin, the birthplace of Vodou but also a country with a strong Catholic presence (approximately 30% of the population), has its main national Marian shrine in the Grotto of Our Lady of Arigbo in Dassa-Zoumé. The grotto, blessed in 1954, has become the country's most important pilgrimage site, attracting hundreds of thousands of faithful each year. The name "Arigbo" comes from the local language and means "she who saves" or "she who liberates," a title that Beninese faithful have given to the Virgin Mary as an expression of their faith in her power of intercession. The shrine, situated amidst hills covered in tropical vegetation, is a place of peace and contemplation where pilgrims come to ask for graces and to give thanks for favors received.

The evangelization of Benin began in the 16th century with Portuguese missionaries, but it was in the 19th century that French missionaries from the Society of African Missions (SMA) established a permanent Church presence. The architecture of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mercy in Cotonou, built in 1955, reflects the fusion of Catholic tradition with African aesthetics: its stained-glass windows depict biblical scenes with figures of African descent, and its high altar is carved from iroko wood, a tree sacred to Benin cultures. The Episcopal Conference of Benin has promoted the Arigbo Shrine as a national pilgrimage site, and every August 15 (the Feast of the Assumption) a grand Mass is celebrated there, concelebrated by all the bishops of the country.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Arigbo in Dassa-Zoumé is also a place of interfaith encounter. Many followers of traditional African religions (Voodoo) and Muslims come to the shrine to pay their respects to the Virgin, whom they consider a powerful spiritual figure. The traditional authorities of Dassa-Zoumé are actively involved in organizing the annual pilgrimage, which has become an event that transcends religious boundaries. The image of Our Lady of Arigbo, an iroko wood carving with African features, is venerated by both Catholics and non-Christians as a symbol of motherhood and protection.

The Archdiocese of Cotonou, the largest in Benin, was established in 1955. Cardinal Bernardin Gantin, the first Cardinal of Benin and Dean of the College of Cardinals, served as Archbishop of Cotonou from 1960 to 1971 and was a strong advocate for Marian devotion. His influence was felt throughout the Church in Benin. The Shrine of Our Lady of Arigbo in Dassa-Zoumé, which he visited on numerous occasions, was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI. Every August 15, the pilgrimage to Dassa-Zoumé draws over 100,000 faithful, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in West Africa.
