Começa. a earlier, in the spring of 1916, with three apparitions of an angel whom the little shepherds first ruad the «Angel of Peace» e, na segunda aparição, «Angel of Portugal. » Lúcia tinha 9 anos, Francisco 8 e Jacinta 7.

The world was in the midst of the First World War. Portugal entered the conflict in March 1916. While Europe burned, on the hills of Aljustrel three shepherd children were receiving a spiritual preparation that would leave them ready to receive the Virgin.

1a aparição do Anjo — Primavera 1916 · Loca do Cabeço

«My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love You! I ask pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.»

Então ele se levantou e disse: «Pray thus. The Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy upon you. Offer prayers and sacrifices constantly to the Most High.»

Desta vez identificou-se pelo nome: «I am the Angel of Portugal. » Suas palavras eram mais exigentes:

«Offer prayer and sacrifices constantly and with fervour to the Most High. Make of everything you can an offering to God, in an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and of supplication for the conversion of sinners. Thus you will draw peace upon your country. I am its Guardian Angel, the Angel of Portugal. Above all, accept and bear with submission the suffering which the Lord will send you.»

3a aparição do Anjo — Outono 1916 · Loca do Cabeço · A aparição eucarística

«Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the most preçous Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And by the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners. »

Then gave them Communion. To Lúcia administrou a Host Sagrado; to Francisco and Jacinta gave to drink from the cáliceEle disse-lhes: «Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.»

The three little shepherds remained prostrate on the ground for a long time, absorved. Francisco and Jacinta had not yet made their First Communion; to receive Communion from the hands of an angel was for them an experience that could not be put into words.

The three children kept silence about these apparitions for months, unble to explain them. They were the only visions of Fátima that they did not recount at onze. Lúcia revealed them years later in her Memórias, written at the bishop’s command.

Lúcia pediu para permanecer na terra para espalhar sua devoção: «My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God»

3a aparição — 13 de julho de 1917 · ~4.000 testemunhas

A aparição mais importante. A Virgem revelou o três segredos de Fátima: the vision of hell, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary with the consecration of Russia, and the vision of the «bishop dressed in white». She also announced that in October she would perform a miracle so that all might believe.

The children had been seized on 13 August by the anticlerical major to force them to reveal the secrets. He imprisoned them and threatened to burn them alive. When they were freed, the Virgin appeared to them on the 19th at Valinhos: «Pray, pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners, for many souls go to hell because there is no one to pray for them. »

The Lady identified herself as «Our Lady of the Rosary» and insisted that a chapel be built. After the apparition, the sun «danced» in the sky for ten minutes, drawing cheers and tears from the crowd. Clothing soaked by the rain dried instantly.

Canonizado by Pope Francis on 13 May 2017 at Fátima, on the centeny of the apparitions. Feast day: 20 February.

Jacinta Marto (1910–1920)

The miracle verified for the canonisation of the two siblings was the complete healing of Luca Baptista, a five-year-old Brazilian boy who in 2013 suffered severe head trauma in a fall from 6.5 metres; the doutors gave him little hope. After his family’s prayer to Francisco and Jacinta, recovered without any after-effects.

Os três segredos de Fátima

Primeiro segredo: a visão do inferno

Revelado em 13 de julho de 1917. Publicado pela Irmã Lúcia em 1941. A Virgem abriu as mãos e mostrou o inferno às crianças:

"We saw a great seja of fire. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilíbrioium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair.»— Irmã Lúcia, Memórias (1941)

She warned that, if this were not done, Russia «will spread her errors throughout the world, promoting wars and persecutions of the Church». In 1984, Pope John Paul II consecrated the world and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, an act confirmed by Sister Lúcia as the one the Virgin had asked for.

Terceiro segredo: o bispo de branco

Written down by Sister Lúcia in 1944 and kept in a forled envelope until the year 2000, when Pope John Paul II ordered its publication. It descreves an an angel with a flaming sword and a figure —»a bishop dressed in white»— who falls under gunfire while praying. The Church interpreted this vision as referring to the atentado de assassinato contra João Paulo II de 13 de maio de 1981 —the exact anniversary of the first apparition— which the Pope miraculously survived. Em 1984, ganhei o Shrine the bullet extracted from his body, which today is set in the crown of the image of the Virgin.

«One hand fired, and another guided the bullet. »Saint- John Paul II

O milagre do sol (13 de outubro de 1917)

It was a morning of torrential rain. Nearly 70,000 people —believers and sceptics, journalists and scientists— had come to the Cova da Iria, drawn by the announcement that something prodigious would happen that day. At midday, after the apparition, the sun began to «dance»: it spun upon itself giving off flashes of colour, plunged three times in a zigzag towards the earth, and then returned to its place. It lasted some ten minutes. Rain-soaked clothing was instantly dry; so was the waterlogged ground.

«The sun trembled, made sudden movements never seen before. The sun ‘danced’ upon itself in a mad whirl. Red as blood, it advanced menacingly upon the earth.»— Avelino de Almeida, jornalista do diário anticlerical O Século, publicado em 15 de outubro de 1917

The testimony of Almeida —a freemason and critic of the Church— was decisive because of its credibility. The science professor of the University of Coimbra, José Maria de Almeida Garrett, documented the phenomenon in a scientific description. The event was visível from several quilometres away, to people who were not in the Cova da Iria.

O santuário hoje

The Capelinha das Aparições (1919)

On 13 May 1981 —the exact anniversary of the first apparition at Fátima— the Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Ağca fired four shots at Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Square. The Pope survived in a manner the doutors descreved as extraordinary. Convinced of the Virgin’s intercession, in 1984 he went on pilgrimage to Fátima and gave the bullet extracted from his body, which today is na coroa da imagem da Virgem que preside à Capelinha.
