In the province of Corrientes, on the banks of the Paraná River, lies the town of Itatí, home to the Basilica and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Itatí. It is one of the most important Marian devotions in northeastern Argentina, so deeply rooted that the town itself bears the name of this Marian invocation.

The name "Itatí" comes from the Guarani language and is usually interpreted as "stone point" or "crag," alluding to the riverside geography of the Paraná River, with its bluffs and rocks jutting into the water. Sources do not always agree on the exact nuance of the etymology, but they do agree on its connection to the rock or crag, a landscape that frames the devotion. The cult arose in the context of Franciscan evangelization and the reductions in the region, where the Christian faith encountered the Guarani world.

En la lengua de la tierra, su nombre es «peñasco»: Madre firme como la roca a orillas del gran río.

It is wise to be cautious with details. The importance and antiquity of the devotion to Our Lady of Itatí in Corrientes, its connection to the evangelization of the area, and the meaning of the Guarani toponym are well-documented; however, the specific details of the image's origin and the earliest accounts of the cult vary depending on the source, and anything not found in solid documentation should be considered local tradition. Where there is no certainty, it is honest to say that it is not documented.

The Rosary naturally accompanies the Marian devotion of Itatí, its festivals and pilgrimages, without there being a singular episode that specifically links it to the origin of this devotion.
