The apparition of Knock

The silent apparition before fifteen witnesses (Ireland, 1879)

A rainy afternoon in 1879, fifteen neighbors of an Irish village, on the wall of their church, saw the Virgin Mary next to St. Joseph, St. John and the Lamb of God, an apparition without a single word.

The witnesses

Knock did not have a single seer: there were fifteen witnesses, children and adults, simple peasants from the village and its surroundings - members of the Byrne, Curry, Callaghan, Durkan, Flatley, Murray, Trench and Walsh families. The youngest, John Curry, was five. They were interrogated separately by an ecclesiastical commission and agreed on the essential. None of them were canonized.

The Apparition

The evening of August 21, 1879, on the back wall of the parish church of St. John the Baptist of Knock in the county of May, the witnesses saw a glowing scene that lasted about two hours in the rain: the Virgin Mary, crowned and in prayer; next to her, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist with a book; and, on an altar, the Lamb of God with a cross, surrounded by angels. Although the rain fell, the wall and vision remained dry.

An apparition without words

The most characteristic feature of Knock is that it was an entirely silent apparition: neither the Virgin nor the other figures pronounced any word. There was therefore no spoken message or verbal order. Tradition has read in that scene - centered on the Lamb on the altar - a quiet invitation to faith, Eucharistic worship and hope, especially for a people then impoverished and beaten by hunger.

Anecdotes and fruit

The witnesses returned to a normal and discreet life; of John Curry, the youngest, it is recorded that he died in 1943. At the end of 1879 there were already numerous cures attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Knock. The place became the national sanctuary of Ireland, and St. John Paul II raised it to the lower basilica in 1979, in the centenary of the apparition, which he himself visited.

A speechless apparition: the adoring silence before the Lamb of God.
