History of Marian devotion in Belarus

Belarus has a Marian tradition dating back to the 15th century, with Byzantine icons and Catholic and Orthodox sanctuaries. The Zhyrovichi icon is the most venerated, considered the "national treasure" of Belarus. Budslau is the main Catholic sanctuary, crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Braslau, Logishyn, Minsk and Trakali complete the Belarusian Marian panorama.

The devotion to Mary in Belarus has been an element of national identity and spiritual resistance during the periods of Russian Tsarist and Soviet domination. The Belarusian Marian shrines are places of encounter between East and West, where Latin, Byzantine and Orthodox Catholic traditions coexist.
