History of Marian devotion in Estonia

Estonia, a European country of Christian tradition, has a Marian history that reflects the vicissitudes of its national history. Devotion to the Virgin Mary has been a central element of popular piety, expressed in shrines, hermites and chapels that spatter its geography. Local Marian advocacy is a testimony to a faith that has accompanied the people through the centuries.

Although religious practice has decreased in the last decades, the Marian shrines of Estonia remain places of pilgrimage and spiritual encounter. The Virgin Mary is venerated under various advocacy that reflect both the Latin tradition and the cultural influences of the country.

Today the Catholic Church in Estonia is a small minority (less than 1% of the population), but it has a significant life of faith. The Apostolic Administration of Estonia is based in Tallinn, with the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul as the main church. Marian devotion is concentrated in the ruins of the convent of Santa Brigida in Prita (Tallin), where a Marian pilgrimage is held every August 15. The convent of Pirita, known as Vallis Mariae (Valle de María), was an important center of Marian devotion in the Middle Ages.
