History of Marian devotion in Luxembourg
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has Our Lady of Luxembourg (Notre- Dame de Luxembourg) as patron and dildo of the afflicted. The image, a size of wood from the 17th century, is venerated in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame of Luxembourg, built by the Jesuits between 1613 and 1621. The Marian devotion in Luxembourg is deeply linked to national history: during wars and epidemics, the Luxemburgers come to the Virgin as a protector.
The procession of the Virgin of Luxembourg, which takes place on the fifth Sunday after Easter (Octave de Nuestra Señora), is one of the most important religious manifestations in the country, declared an Inmaterial Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. It also highlights the devotion to the Virgin of Fatima in Wiltz, which reflects the influence of Portuguese apparitions on Luxembourg's piety.
The Eighth of Our Lady, which is held annually for five weeks from the third Sunday after Easter, is one of the most important manifestations of popular religiosity in Europe. During the Eighth, the image of the Virgin is carried in procession from the cathedral through the streets of the city, in a tradition dating back to 1624 and which was declared Inmaterial Cultural Heritage of Luxembourg. The shrine of Our Lady of Fatima of Wiltz, built as a thanksgiving after World War II, is another important center of Marian devotion.
