History of Marian devotion in Norway
Norway, a European country of Christian tradition, has a Marian history that reflects the vicissitudes of its national history. Devotion to the Virgin Mary has been a central element of popular piety, expressed in shrines, hermites and chapels that spatter its geography. Local Marian advocacy is a testimony to a faith that has accompanied the people through the centuries.
Although religious practice has decreased in the last decades, the Marian shrines of Norway remain places of pilgrimage and spiritual encounter. The Virgin Mary is venerated under various advocacy that reflect both the Latin tradition and the cultural influences of the country.
After the Lutheran Reform of 1537, Catholicism was banned in Norway for almost three centuries. Religious freedom was restored in 1845, and the Catholic Church began to reorganize. Today, the Catholic diocese of Oslo and the territorial prelature of Trondheim serve a growing Catholic community, fed by immigration. The shrine of Our Lady of Røldal, with its medieval stavkirke and a size of the Virgin of the 13th century, remains a place of pilgrimage. The Virgin Mary is invoked in Norway as Star of the Sea (Stella Maris), a protector of fishermen and sailors on the Norwegian coast.

Our Lady Stella Maris of Tromsø, venerated in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tromsø
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Tromsø, in the Arctic Circle, is the seat of the prelate of Tromsø. Dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, it is known as the most northern cathedral in the world. The image of the Virgin Stella Maris presides over the temple, and the faithful come to entrust the protection of the sailors and fishermen of the Arctic.

Our Lady of Fatima of Oslo, venerated in the parish of San Olaf of Oslo
The parish of San Olaf in Oslo, the oldest in Norway after the Catholic restoration, houses a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. The Catholic community of Oslo, increasingly diverse by immigration, celebrates a solemn Mass on May 13 in honor of the Virgin of Fatima.

The Catholic parish of Stavanger, on the south-west coast of Norway, is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. Founded by Dominican missionaries, it keeps alive the tradition of the community prayer of the Rosary. The church, built in modern style, is home to a multicultural community.
