Anecdotes about the Virgin Mary
The night Lyon was filled with lights
On Fourvière Hill, overlooking Lyon, stands a Marian shrine beloved by the city since ancient times. In the 17th century, while a plague epidemic ravaged southern France, the civil and religious authorities of Lyon made a vow to the Virgin Mary: if the city was spared, they would dedicate a statue to her and place it under her special protection. In 1643, the city councilors ascended the hill in procession to give thanks and officially consecrate the city to Mary. That the Virgin "miraculously delivered" Lyon from the plague belongs to the people's interpretation; what is documented is the context of the plague, the vow, and the procession.
Two centuries of faithful devotion passed, and the vow was fulfilled. In 1852, it was decided to install the celebrated Golden Statue of the Virgin in the bell tower of the Fourvière chapel. The ceremony was planned for September 8, the traditional Marian feast day, but flooding of the Saône River forced its postponement to December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This change of date, seemingly a setback, proved providential.
On the afternoon of December 8, 1852, the weather was uncertain; rain was feared, and part of the official program was shortened. But as night fell, the sky cleared, and spontaneously, the people of Lyon illuminated their windows with candles and took to the streets with lights to celebrate the placement of the statue of the Virgin. That simple, heartfelt gesture sprang from the hearts of a grateful people. Since then, every December 8, the people of Lyon place their lumignons—small candles in glasses—on their windowsills as a sign of gratitude and trust in Mary. From this domestic custom grew the current Fête des Lumières, a grand festival of light that lasts several days.
Each year, a torchlight procession is organized from Saint-Jean Cathedral to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, atop the hill. This pilgrimage blends Marian devotion, local tradition, and popular celebration, with entire families participating. Regarding the Rosary, no specific or foundational link between this Marian devotion and the Rosary is found in the sources. Given that it is a major Marian shrine, it is reasonable that the Rosary is frequently prayed there, especially on December 8th, but this belongs to the ordinary practice of Marian piety rather than being unique to Fourvière.
